I had the exact same thing happen to me exactly as you described. Went over a speed bump and thought my whole rear end fell off. Shocks were blown.

Just checked, and the fluid is red. So that's ruled out.

I have a 1997 Limited with 225000km. In the past month I've replaced shocks, springs, new brakes, ABS sensor, complete flush and refill of all the fluids and rotated tires. Timing belt and water pump have been done three times and are not due for a long while. Now I have this noise and feeling...
