Can you elaborate? What are fuel trims, both STFT and LTFT? and could you get this information? if you smell fuel its either due to a leaking fuel system, or your rig is running pig rich for some reason.

in the front diff; if you have an A.D.D diff, the oil can only circulate if you are in 4WD, which is why Toyota recommends that you use 4WD once a month. If the oil can't get to the carrier bearings regularly, or the axle bearings, they will corrode and fail.

there is a small harness in the tank that could be the problem, you could do a resistance test of the sending unit before and after the harness to verify, but at the age and mileage I would consider if the gauge itself is the problem, maybe an Ebay, or junkyard part is the solution
