Great write up as it was very helpful for my change of the whole starter.
The hardest part was getting the top bolt off of the starter. I had to use a universal joint and several extensions and after a 30-min struggle, finally found the right position to get it off.

The loud "Click" is me turning the ignition key and I suppose the starter engaging without a crank.
It will start up perfectly a little less than half of the time and has been doing it since the beginning of the summer.
It has never gotten to the point where I couldn't eventually start it .
My 2000 Toyota 4Runner is having difficulty starting consistantly.
I checked the battery and the terminals both are clean and working.
I took a video of the intermittant starting and am hoping that someone will have a suggestion as to what may be wrong.
