I could help you avoid that fate if you want to buy a non SAS-d Gen 2. About to post it up in the FS Classifieds. No other mods - but the difference between my asking price and your budget would leave you a lot of money for the build.

If that's a question I'd guess the answer is no - the seller's last bump was 2013. On the other hand if it's still for sale he'd probably be happy to see some interest after three years...

And, for the master mechanics - what are the things a driver could do that might cause - or avoid - this type of problem?

As another non-mechanic with the same setup, my question is, how did it "get stuck in neutral"? What were you doing when the problem arose?

I have an identical '95 3.0 v6, automatic. Agree it's more than adequate for "trail vehicle" and backroads but it is not happy on the interstates, especially if it's hilly. Can be a challenge to maintain uphill speed and short merges into fast traffic are not pleasant with the 3.0.
