I think my mechanic is getting to the same solution -i.e. the ecu (ecm). he tested all connections between units and fuses and says all are good. i have found a used one on ebay for 130$ so am going to give that a go thanks for all the help

Thanks for the replies. If it was the timing belt, wouldn't I still hear the starter motor trying to kick in? Sorry I am not sure what you mean by interference or non interference motors? Thanks warren
