With the rear seat out, the bed will still work as the side rails take the weight.

Sorry I missed this question. We had the smaller brackets at one point, but went with the larger brackets because it was easier for the user to assemble and they are stronger. The brackets are in line with the wheel well so they don't really get in the way. Believe it or not the seat latch...
