This is my transfer case, but how come I have never seen it before?

So I have been looking at other 3rd gen transfer cases, and I notice that I have yet to see the same one as mine. The one i typically see is a straight line that goes from "4h" -> "n" -> "4l". how come mine is different? and what is H4L?

I believe, but I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong, that you have a locker. H4L is High locked, and L4L is Low locked, obviously H4 is high 4x4 and H2 is 2wd. You probably have it in H2-H4 setting all the time, and I bet you have a button to toggle between 2 and 4. Then you can shift and lock it when needed.

This is a pretty nice feature to have, I am sure this will make a few others envious

BAHAHA, you just made my day!! 1) cause i am dying here in class, and 2) because now i know that i have a locker!! haha. i was always bummed that i didnt have the "R/R" button next to my steering wheel. haha.

that makes so much sense now, i thought it meant High4Low, and thought that was too much of a contradiction. haha.

honestly, i dont know if what you are saying is right or not, but its more than i got on my own. haha.

Sorry, you don't have a locker in the conventional sense.

That just "locks" the front and rear driveshafts so they deliver equal power to each axle. It doesn't lock the front or rear diff so that equal power is delivered to each wheel on the same axle, like a locker does.

thanks, but now i wonder, whats the difference between that and 4Hi then?

H2-H4 is the normal pavement driving option. You press the button on the shifter to toggle between 2wd and 4wd. When you are in 2wd all the power goes to the rear axle only. When you are in 4wd the transfer case is not slipt 50/50 front to rear, it can allow 100% power to go to any of the four wheels. This is also known as All Wheel Drive. The transfer case can do this because it has a differential built in (center diff).
H4L means high range, 4wd, locked center diff. The transfer case is now locked to a 50/50 power split and you are guaranteed to have power going to at least one front and one rear wheel at all times.
L4L is low range, 4wd, locked center diff.

The center diff in your 4Runner is not an extra traction aid, it doesn't give you any off-road advantage, it just gives you an option for on-road improvement.
When people refer to lockers, they are talking about front and/or rear differentials, not the center one.
