Is it time to put my dog down?

I know it's a difficult question that many of us face, but my little pug buddy has recently taken a turn for the worse. He's lost most of his vision but was still doing well enough to get around and showed no signs of any difficulty. But during this last week and a half, he's suddenly lost a lot of weight and no longer has the strength to stand on his own. Last night it sounds like he also had blood in his stool and is beginning to develop sores on his body.

I know it's time, but am I wrong doing this? Am I denying any chance of him possibly recovering and still having a decent quality of life? I've never faced this difficult situation before, but I appreciate any advice you guys have.

I'd take him to a Vet and get their professional opinion about whether anything can be done. If he's suffering and nothing can be done, I'd do the compassionate thing.

I feel for you, I was asking this same question about my 15yo Yorkie, Nixon, back in August. He was the same, very skinny and barely able to stand. I had never had to make the decision either, I always assumed he'd just pass on his own.

It doesn't sound good but if you're thinking it may be time, take him to the vet. Any good vet will examine him to be sure it's time before they just put him down. The vet may have seen him recently and not mentioned it, but it was only a month or so after Nixon's yearly checkup when I realized it was time. When we took him in, they took him back and examined him for a bit then came back and confirmed our fears.

It's a very hard decision but you have to keep his quality of life in mind- regardless of how much you want him to hang in there, prolonging suffering isn't the answer. Good luck to you.
 
One of a dog lover's hardest decisions. I agree with the others. Take him to a vet and see what they say. Have the most information possible.
 
Thanks guys for the input. I'm going to meet with the vet in an hour. It's just so hard because this happened so suddenly. I love my buddy and he's been by my side since I was 8. But I want what is best for him ultimately.
 
My heart goes out to u and your faithful companion. I've been down this road 4 times now and it seems to get tougher every time. You have to make that decision under difficult circumstances. Part of u just wants him to be at ease, but the other part doesn't want to let go. Dogs bring so much joy to our lives, but u know that one day that time will come. I know u will make the right decision that's best for him.

If you know it's time, like you said, then don't continue his suffering. It usually goes really quick at the end like you said it has and they usually lose control of their bowels. All the vet is going to do is put him on IVs and if he's really old, they aren't going to do much but I don't think they will give an opinion on this kind of matter.

Hey guys, I appreciate the support and advice more than you know. On Friday afternoon, we said goodbye to our longtime friend after 17 great years. We had a very nice vet come to the house so we could just be there with him. It was a very difficult decision and weekend, but I know in my heart it was the right thing to do. I also realize now that it's pretty special when you have a dog that makes your family feel complete in that different kind of dimension. I can tell that you guys all feel the same way and share that connection with your dogs.

Here's a picture of Wickie from 5 years ago. Miss my buddy very much, but thankful that I had a little friend like him.

I'm sorry to hear. My furry best friend just turned 12. Hope that day never comes, but an inevitable part of his life. Until then I am going to enjoy every moment with him!
 
You did the right thing, and he's at peace now. They will let you know when it's time, and it sounds like he did. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. RIP Wickie
 
What you did was the biggest sacrifice you can make for your pet. Holding on while watching him suffer just wouldn't be right.

I know the pain all too well, God Bless.
 
My buddy, i was walking thru a truck stop in indiana about ten years ago
Heard a wimper coming from a dumpster? It was weston ,some jerk off thru this puppy away ??? He was in rough shape we got him home and he will be with us till his end , just a dam good dog, spoiled as hell

God bless you and your little buddy

I'm all to familiar with your pain, and hope you had a beautiful last few days with him. We as dog owners all know that at a certain point in life we will need to say goodbye, and however hard that is it's still worth every day of life you get to share with them.

I've been in your shoes recently also. In September I had to have my almost 11 year old Weimaraner put down. It was by far the hardest thing I have ever had to do so far in my life. I've been with my wife for 14 years and that's the first time she has ever seen me cry. Mine had congestive heart failure. She was full of fluid and just wouldn't eat anything. I feel your pain and sorry for your loss.


We now have a new Weimaraner pup. Our 11 year old passed on September 22. I was looking at the paperwork after we got her and turns out she was born on September 23. I thought that was kind of weird.
