So I just finished watching the HBO series "The Pacific" and it was awesome. Some of the best cinematography for a war film/series ever! I am a big fan of Band of Brothers too and was just wondering what you guys thought.

In BOB, the story was focused more around the whole Easy Company as opposed to The Pacific focusing on 3 main characters who were somewhat detached from eachother. I think BOB did an outstanding job at drawing you into the soldier's individual lives despite there being so many of them and not a lot of time to focus on each one. It really still gives you a great feel for those guys and what it must have felt like to be there.

The Pacific spent a lot more time on just the 3 main characters and focused more on the individual struggle and the psychological impact of war while BOB focused less on the internal struggle and more on the soldier's accomplishments and their story.

Both had amazing battle sequences and both were about as realistic as it gets for a movie/series. So it comes down to personal taste. I give BOB a 9.5/10 and The Pacific a 9/10, but I have a feeling I may like it even more after I watch it again. What do you guys think?

the character development of BOB was absolutely amazing and can never be matched with a world war II series. i cant think of any part where i thought it was boring, but with the pacific i found myself easily distracted haha

I agree. There were great episodes and then a couple pretty dry ones in The Pacific.
 
So I DVR'd the series when it aired and I've kept it saved on there since then. I got around to watching the series again and I'm on episode 9 tonight. I have to say I liked it the first time, but it's even better the 2nd time around. I noticed a lot of little things I missed the first time and I have to say I was floored all over again with the battle sequences. Really amazing cinematography.

Although I will say that some of the big "grand" scenes of the convoys of ships during the invasions looked totally fake - like superimposed ridiculous fake. Also, sometimes they would have a grand scene of a battleship or something in the background while people were talking and I have to say the lighting didn't look real one bit. I've noticed that with all of Spielberg's later movies too, especially on the new Indiana Jones. Honestly, I think he's slippin a little and can't tell the difference between good, real-looking special FX and not so good FX. Oh well, still an excellent series, but it doesn't beat BOB. Now that's a masterpiece!

dito! and that is why I chose band of brothers. Both were amazing though!

I am going to go right out and say it, I am biased being a Marine.
 
Band of brothers all the way. The Pacific is good but the shoes it had to fill after BOB were too big

My view is slanted to The Pacific because my father fought with the 77th Infantry Division at Guam, Leyte, & Okinawa. The Marines get well-deserved credit for all they did in the Pacific but few seem to know that the Army was there too.

BTW, 04Nov is the US release of Hacksaw Ridge, which is about Desmond Doss, a guy in my dad's division. Look closely in the trailer to see how the 77th soldiers drew or stenciled the distinctive outline of the unit's patch on the sides of their helmets.

Yeah, I hear you, the rivalry never ends. But you of all people should appreciate the nickname my dad's unit got from the Leathernecks on Guam: the "77th Marine Division." My dad didn't tell me that either - it was in a news article about the battle.

His Co. C, 306th Regiment of the 77th went to Okinawa with 203 officers and men. Sixteen were left at the end of the battle.

Band of Brothers. Read the book too, made the series even more enjoyable. Been 15 yrs since it came out I still find myself watching episodes of BoB
 
As an ANGLICO Marine the Pacific all day! JASCO the precursor to ANGLICO were featured in the Pacific.
