alternators
 

lately its been always something

while working on something else today, noticed a new whine in the engine compartment.
Seems to be coming from the alternator, yet still throwing 14 volts

recommended remans ?

Autozone is $116 Napa was 134
Looked at amazon and they have one in "a denso package" for 164
Toyota is 229. but has a 30 core so I assume its a reman

hopefully if its the alternator it will be good for another 300 miles

would rather replace before it goes as my commute is 100+miles one way on mostly country roads and forest service roads with very limited cell service

Big 3 & Alt upgrade. I plan to do this upgrade this year because my Alt is whining after going through a few water crossings last year.

Don't buy the Autozone whatever you do. I just replaced mine that was only 13 months old. Stock truck. They have a lifetime warranty, but who wants to have their alternator die once a year?

I'm on my 3rd autozone alternator in a year and it makes a quiet whine noise. They're warranties are nice but I'd still avoid them. Honestly, I would keep the whining oem one until the bearing is wobbly. If you don't like that idea, then I would recommend getting your oem alternator rebuilt by an alternator shop. I regret trading in my oem for a core so avoid that if possible

already did the big 3
and no...I am not a fan of autozone lifetime stuff. I had a cheby truck that I did 3 lifetime starters on
original one cause it was cheap and had a "lifetime warranty",, 2nd cause it was under warranty, 3rd, cause I needed it and I was selling it, and free again "warranty"
A dodge diesel that the alternator lasted less than 2 years. Put on a napa and a year later sold it
lifetime warranties to me don't mean crap on a lot of stuff
(like I will love you forever...Ill warranty this for life...sure)
but sometimes quick and easy stuff to replace can be worth the gamble, esp if your young and not planning to keep something around long....
but I'm not into doing a few alternators over the next few years left in my limited life....( I'm an old fart)
around here shops that do the work like rebuilding a starter or alternator are few and far between......but in the "olden days" that was the way to go

If you ever upgrade again pick up this guy. I got mine for $58 prime shipping. keep an eye on the used link. They are norm not even used just damaged box item shipped from amazon. Took me less than an hour to install. Just need the 3 washers and the adaptor for the wiring.

anyone make the modified bracket ?

You dont need a modified bracket. I see v6 in your sig. All you need is 3 washers and a adaptor for the wiring. I even used my stock belt.

will I still need to change the pulley and space it out ?

I just did this on Sunday. Assuming the diameter of the bolts that hold the pulley's on is the same' I would still suggest against it. Our pull is smaller then the CS144 pulley and it would cause the alternator to spin faster. At low RPM that isn't bad, but if you have to rev it up you could cause damage to the alternator by spinning it to quickly. Not worth it. You can easily line up the belt so it is nice and straight and also you can use the stock belt, or a larger belt.

I plan to switch to a power steering belt. That way 2 of the belts match on the car.

but to line up the belts did you have to put a washer behind the pulley as another write up said ?

No. I put my spacer on the back of alternator so the alternator was pushed forward. From what I could see it was perfectly lined up on the first ribs. I'm going to check it throughout the week to make sure it isn't rubbing but I listened to it run for a while after I did it and it never made a sound. Most times a misaligned belt squeaks or howls.

Been reading several different threads on this, and found out that the spacer on the pulley is when your doing a 4cylinder, mines a v6...did not catch that until re reading a few minutes ago
