Dashcam install: Mounting + wire+trim advice
 

Just got a new 2020 4Runner. Wondering two things: Mounting location and finishing my wiring.

The front windshield mirror area has the big black box which I believe is part of Toyota's safety system. Then there is also the black dots which I think are the antenna, and could also affect mounting?



Wondering if I should mount it on the left/drivers side, where it seems like there is a bit of a cutout it could fit in and be mostly behind the mirror, or if I should go to the right of the black box "out in the open" on the passenger side? Any thoughts on one location vs another?



I've run most of my wires behind the headliner/weatherstripping, but it's the plastic trim I am having most trouble with. I can use the pry tool to pry it open a bit but I definitely don't want to pry too hard and risk cracking/breaking the trim or one of the clips or whatever is holding it in place. I'm also most concerns with the A-pillar and the other trim beside the rear seats, which hold the airbags. Any advice for running the wires behind these trim pieces? One of the wires is thinner than the other.

I have a 2020 also and I mounted my front camera on the passenger side of the rear view mirror. There is a screw under the air bag badge that you have to remove in order to get behind the trim.

I mounted a small one to the mirror support (although my 2010 doesn't have that big box). Then, I ran the wires above the headliner and down the passenger A pillar and added (or found? I can't remember) a small hole into the glove box, and pulled power from the 12v plug in there. Works great!

As others have mentioned, there's a screw on the A pillar. The headliner can be gently pulled down from above the door if you pull off the weather strip - you might have to disconnect the grab handle, I can't remember.

Just to confirm, the grab handle on the A pillar has two covers and screws there. Those aren't just holding the grab handle, but actually the whole A pillar trim? I didn't see any other spots for a screw.

Also the pillar/airbag next to the rear seats did not have any sort of screw/cover/etc. to remove it or deal with it...

Hmm, I'd have to look. Usually I give a good tug, and if it doesn't pop off I start looking for screws.

Blendmount with the wiring running up the OEM wire track on the windshield. I ran it down the driver side A pillar since the fuse box is there. No problems pulling the headliner down slightly and pushing the wiring it.

I'm trying to get my cables down the passenger A pillar side, and need to remove the vent to thread it the last 24"...

To get the vent out, apparently you have to remove the lower half of the dash / glovebox door because the vent is trapped behind the lower section of the dash.

Haven't gotten around to doing it myself, but when I do I certainly won't be using the add-a-circuit kit.

Go with the passenger side.

I have Roav C2 Pro. It takes about 5 min to install or take out.

The mount is a suction cup and power is USB, which I didn't like the USB at first but it turns out it's not bad. In the 2011 I had it on the passenger side tucked behind the mirror. Then stuffed the wire under the Windshield trim -> A-Pillar -> Weather stripping -> Kick panel -> dashboard -> Console to outlet.

For the most part I never knew it was there.

The 2020 has the goiter over there I tried the driver's side, but found it annoying. So I went back to the passenger side with the same routing, except i plumbed it a USB port on the back of the rear console.

Routing the wires just takes a plastic tool. Don't use metal. Just tuck the wires under the panels, they have enough space that it's very doable.

I just purchased a 2020 Limited 4x4 and I have an old dash cam already with a USB power connection. I was hoping to find a dongle that could hookup to the rear view mirror power, but the new TSS-p has changed the wiring. I did find this wiring diagram for the Toyota dash cam that may help with mounting and wiring.

I did mine, mounted using double sided tape to glass on camera pad, GPS sensor on top right of windshield also had it. I used terminal splicer blocks and fished wired through headliner, down A pillar and into side of fusebox. Added wire insulation to prevent abrading.
