Help! 05 Rear window has a mind of it's own!

Couldn't find the same problem in previous posts.

This morning I turned the car off and when I removed the key from the ignition, the rear window went down all the way. I put the key back in, turned to ACC and was able to "roll" it back up. When I removed the key, it went down again. (repeat)

So, I tried to get it rolled up from the hatch by putting the key in and turning clockwise, and it went up. Removed the key, it went down. So I left it that way for the day while at work.

Driving home, I was able to roll it up once the car was started (as expected), but then at a stop light, the window went 1/2 way down. Then 2min later, it went all the way down and now I can't get it to go back up AT ALL. No, the override door button is not pushed in. The window is stuck down and it's freakin cold out!

I have a Viper transmitter now, so no capability for doing it on the key fob.

Latest: using the key in the hatch locks all the doors clockwise, but doesn't unlock them CCW... and the window doesn't go up when turning CCW like it's supposed to.

All other windows operate fine and I never disconnected the battery.
 
Sounds like you might have an electrical short.

If I were you, I'd find a way to completely disable it until you can properly diagnose the problem. Check to see what other things are on the same fuse circuit.
 
I think it's a control unit problem - I just started up the 4R, immediately hit the rear window UP switch, and the window went up 4" then stopped & the switch wouldn't work. Stop engine & restart: push switch, window goes up another 4". (repeat 2x) The window is now up. Although not operational. Now that the window is up, I'll look to pull the fuse on that circuit so it can't go back down.

And I'll have to check for 100k warranty coverage. I'm at 77k miles.
 
Try pulling the switch out of the dash and see if you can manually control the rear window up/down by touching the wires together. That will at least tell you if the switch is faulty.

BTW, if you do have a faulty switch, I could see it causing the problems you mentioned when you were trying to control the rear window with the key from the hatch.
 
You could try unplugging the dash switch to see if the rear key switch works, but touching wires together is not going to be easily done. The wires will be locked into a connector and are a real pita to get out. I don't think the problem is with the dash switch though.

Have you had any issues with the battery lately.

Other than that, my guess is the module or the key switch itself. Hopefully it is covered under warranty. Toyota Platinum should cover it. Good Luck.

All it takes is a small piece of wire to jump the terminals together.
 
No battery issues.

I was thinking it was the dash switch, but then when the rear-defrost & wiper switches also didn't work, I thought it could be the wiring harness that connects the car to the hatch.... but then when the hatch key wouldn't operate too... that's why I now think it might be a computer problem (I think it's connected to the ECU).

BTW: fuse is fine. It's on the same circuit as all the windows. So I pulled it because I don't want the rear window going down again on it's own.

I'm going to bring it in. See what the dealer says. Hopefully he says it's covered, whatever it is.

AP- You mentioned a Viper transmitter, any chance that's the problem? You might try pulling the battery from your Viper transmitter fob to make sure it doesn't have a faulty button or whatever that's causing it to send a signal that the 4Runner ECU interprets as the "rear window down" command.

In the process of building a custom remote starting system I learned that the door lock, door unlock, and rear window down signals from the OEM fob are not that different after they're de-modulated by the on-board ECU.

It's a long shot but that's my $.02 on the matter...
 
my money on the Viper unit also

so when it is up- lock out the power windows and it should not be able to come down, agree?

At a minimum that will keep the back end secure while you are at work and so on.

Got me curious. Do 4th gens have the back window down feature on the key fob? If so-try removing the battery from the key transmitter fob and see if anything changes.
 
ECU problem: computer was malfunctioning. Covered under extended warranty. Remove & replace, had my truck back in 1 day. Thanks for the tips, certainly good to hear it was covered.
