horid gas mileage

regarding my '94

Well, after noticing a huge decline in gas mileage (I'm down to around 11.3mpg in the city now) I had it tuned up and the feul system cleaned out, and still no difference. My last ditch effort was to disconnect the battery to clear the memory on the computer, hoping that maybe the control to the injectors or something would change. I think it has improved slightly, but hard to tell.

Is there anything I should look at that may be the cause? The 4runner, runs great, if you didn't notice the gas consumption you'd never think something was wrong.

I'm hoping it can be fixed and it won't be too expensive.

How are you calculating the fuel mileage?

after your car idles for a while look at the ground under your tail pipe, if its black you probably need a new O2 sensor. when they go bad they usualy make the engine run too rich, which is beter than too lean since that could cause heat damage. Anyways that usualy wouldn't throw your milieage off that far but if its been a problem for a while the cat could be restricting the exhaust and causing a power loss which would further lower your mileage.

Is someone siphoning gas from your tank?

It's been known to happen...especially with teenagers around.

I thought the 2nd gen 4runners came with horrible fuel economy as a standard feature?!

Seriously though, i think the 2nd gen's 3.0L V6 is well-known for it's horrible fuel economy. I don't think that you can do much to improve it...maybe transplant the 3rd gen's 3.4L V6 into your 4runner as a last resort???
