01 Fuel Pump going out?

Here is what I have noticed - when I fill tank, I noticed there is never pressure when I unscrew gas cap. Gas cap is new. I also catch a whiff every now and then of gas but it is not coming from spout, smells like it is around the tank but it is not "wet" Based on what you guys have shared sounds like I need to drop the tank and start replacing pump, etc. Question, would a leak create an intermittent guage reading problem?

Thanks

It's possible you have a rust pin hole somewhere up high on the tank or more likely in the spout plumbing somewhere. If it's on the upper side, you will get air and gas smell coming out but not a fuel leak. Do you get the fuel smell when the car has just been driven and there SHOULD be some pressure in the tank?

Thanks Kanoe - great question

Yes, strong gas fumes smell only after driving and some pressure on tank. I currently have a full tank and drove yesterday in hot weather. Parked and could definitely smell while standing next to the DS rear door / gas hatch door area. Only smells after I drive, not after sitting for awhile. Think we are on to something....

Thanks
