04 harsh staru up sounds and rattling engine sound with dtc's...pls help

posting this for a pal. its a 2004 sport v6 2wd with 155k miles, bought used 3 yr ago
his truck has been rattlin at startup for some time now, worse early mornings , when the engine is cold
multiple dtc codes too

That is a load of weird DTCs...

Mainly Throttle position & knock sensors...

Does the rattling occur only on start-up or also when the engine runs?
 
Major rattling occurs at startup...sounds like a diesel engine....then after abt 20 secs...it normalizes.
Though the engine still sounds kinda weird..thin whinning sound unlike the normal growl of the v6 engine..

that was my first though, but he doesnt have any coolant leaks, and no msifire codes.......makes me want to rule out the famous hg.
he has changed the timing chain and other related components...still no dice, cos we were thinking maybe the timing chin is loose/stretched

Oh, yeah my bad. I glanced over your codes and thought a saw a misfire one in there. Looks like they're all throttle position or knock sensor codes.
 
Ill put my money on a mouse chewing the harness on bank 1/Passenger side f the motor. Start looking for chewed wires or mouse nests. let us know what you find. I see way too much rodent damage to wires at work and this sounds like its a good chance that thats what it is.

When was the chain replaced, did these issues occur recently since the chain was replaced? Did you guys measure the oil pump clearance and/or check start-up oil pressure when doing the timing chain? Also, what oil is your friend running?

This is also a possibility, I have seen DTCs like that caused by rodent nibbling. It would make some sense considering you have knock sensor DTCs and throttle position DTCs which usually aren't directly related.
 
The chain was replaced abt 4k miles ago in nov.he thought changing the chain will solve the prob...it didnt..he bought a complete chain assy from ebay..
No technical check was done on oil pump or clearance.pressure..apart from visual inspection. He is running 10w 40...avg temps in his location is 25deg C
 
Why is he running such a ridiculously thick oil?

The 1GR-FE he has should be running 5w-30 which will cover it into the -29°C (-20°F) and upwards of the 38°C (100°F) range. He might have caused the issues by running such a thick oil in the engine for a while.
 
the ambient temp in his his location rarely goes below 20 deg c, so 0w 30 and 5w 30 oils are not easy to come by

sorry i meant 0w-40 mobil 1. thats the only grade of mobil 1 available in his location
