04 Tacoma 3.4 motor into a 96 4Runner

My 96 4runner blew a head gasket and I've been working on getting the heads off and ran into a heck of a time getting the exhausts off. No room to get to the bolts. Anyway I found a wrecked 04 Tacoma with the 3.4 motor. If I can buy the Tacoma will the motors just swap out? Are there any differences in the motors or assessors?

I'm not 100% sure on the variances in the years of the 3.4, but they are the same for the most part, including the belt driven accessories. One thing to look into would be a vacuum diagram and how they compare. I know the earlier 3rd gen 4Runners have the charcoal canister in the engine bay, while the late 1st gen Tacomas ('01-04) have the canister near the fuel tank. This may affect some of the vacuum hoses and routing.

Other than that try looking up general wiring diagrams and harnesses to see if the majority of the components are in line. I can't think of any major reasons this wouldn't work, especially since they are both OBD2.
