05-09 4.7L Doug Thorley Headers, group buy

For the price we're getting the headers at I can live with it. I'm sure Burtman can get you a deal on those too. He also sold me 3 MagnaFlow 54956 high flow cats and a MagnaFlow 12256 18" muffler that I'm fabbing together a complete system with. I'll post up pics of the install this weekend.

Yes, ANYONE THAT NEEDS MAGNAFLOW CATS/MUFFLERS, etc. I have great deals on them. Just contact me. The above quote was from the other header thread.

The cost of installing these headers alone is so high that I'm not going to mess around with trying to reuse the old cats. I'll be buying new cats as insurance.

My OEM cats are less than 2 years old. But... I am strongly considering getting new ones for several reasons.

  • High flow.
  • Preserve my old manifold for possible resale.

My questions are:
  1. Will I need to get the URD o2 similator?
  2. Will I need to cut the flanges or anything else off my old manifold. If so, that kind of defeats one of my reasons for getting new cats.

Of you go high flow you will need URD simulator or some other trick to fool the computer.
You can unbolt your existing manifold and cats and have a complete new system built like I am and preserve the old setup for resale. Nothing has to be cut as they will be putting in all new.

Is this always the case or do some folks get lucky and not have any error codes?

So weld the cat directly to the Y pipe? Also, what Y pipe did you get?

If you throw a high flow cat in you will get a code because it is moving so much faster in there. You could do the trick where you screw on a couple spark plug non-foulers to take the o2 out of the airstream but it doesn't always work. URD sim always works and is worth the $150 IMO.
The stock manifold has a cat on it, then the connecting y-pipe has another cat or 2 depending on year. If you are having headers installed you may as well have them build you a new y-pipe with the new cat in it. Shouldn't cost that much and it's easy for them to do.
On mine they are building me a full dual exhaust that connects to the headers with no cats at all. I have an URD sim on the way but am doing the non-fouler trick til it makes it.

t-man, isn't there a magnaflow Y pipe that will work too? I think we talked about it?
They would still have to run the pipe down to where it connects and also extend the wiring for the rear O2 sensors down to reach.
The biggest thing from what I have read is that even people getting an oe cat welded in place of the old one are having issues with the code popping up. Toyota sensors are so finicky it's crazy. It's really hit or miss.
A high flow cat will definitely throw a code though and you will have to do one of the methods to defeat it.

Oh, and URD is on back order for the simulators due to their supplier not sending any plugs for 6 months! O.o
I ended up ordering the universal one.

happy to see this GB, i guess i'm late to the party. i always said i'd get on this if it ever happened.

anyone know a reputable shop for installing these in the Philly area? Lancaster Area? No experience welding and only have an apartment otherwise I'd tackle myself. Just dont have the resources.

working on everything else in the meantime.

Headers came in nice and packaged as expected.
I understand I will need some new pipes to fit onto the headers? I don’t want anything to be real loud and want to reuse any of my existing parts so long as its legal and more importantly no codes being thrown. I understand this is isnt a cheap procedure but I would like it to be straightforward. What're my options?

Install shop just needs to cut you manifold off right in front of the catalytic converter then weld the header in. Directions are included with the headers so they can see what to do. Will keep it quiet, legal and no codes.

just a thought for anyone going the DIY route... You may want to consider removing the steering shaft when installing the dr. side. It should only be a few bolts and should come out without too much effort. It' it's rusted to hell like mine, it's a good time to go ahead and replace it. It will be one less thing in your way. :thumb:

edit... removing the UCAs form where they attach to the frame would also help a lot... and obviously the brake line brackets.

Got a part number for the steering shaft? Mine is frozen solid.

I'm a bit lost. The messages I have quoted you on above seem to say otherwise. There are two (2) catalytic converters at the manifold - one (1) on each cylinder bank. Are you saying that I wont need this "URD" piece?

Thanks again for trying to explain

I'm a bit lost.

unfortunately i still am as well. this GB came up quickly (i never expected one honestly) and this was one project i hadn't done my research on. the more i look into this, the more i get confused.

i just dont have the dough ATM to justify spending all of said dough just to save like $80. between the headers, possible cats, possible muffler, possible O2 sensors or sensor fakeouts, misc gaskets/hardware and labor specifics this is one project i would require a write-up or need much more time to research.

it doesn't help i'm on work travel for three weeks and can't do any of this welding work myself.

If you guys are just looking at replacing your existing manifold and keeping the stock catalytic converters then the pipe gets cut right in front of the first cat, then the header gets welded in. Nothing further is required.
If you want high flow cats then those will need to be welded in and a y-pipe built to replace that stock setup. Also, if you go high flow cats, or none as I have, you will need a simulator to trick the computer.
Does that clear it up a little?

spoon-fed info always does :biggrin1:

my rig has 150k on her and i presume would need new cats. i dont think i would install new headers with old cats. how does removing the cats affect the ability to pass typical state inspections (PA has emissions, no idea what it entails)? i'm guessing this is the question of 'legality' within the thread?

saving on not having to replace the cats helps. a simulator isn't much of a cost against the cats i guess. Thanks for the clarity.
