Damn, I've had two highly rated exhaust specialty shops here in Seattle turn down installing these headers. I provided them with the PDF's explaining the install and explained that this install has been done on many other's T4R's, siting this forum, but they won't touch it! :mad2::mad2::mad2:
Any ideas on how to get the shops to do this job?

I am sorry for my absence.
1. You will not pass a visual inspection.
2. They are not carb legal
3. You "can" pass smog, if you have all 3 catalytic converters and your sensors. Clear your codes, don't say anything, you won't get a check engine light.
4. polish steel attract the eyes.
Do not use the Manifold Gasket they give you. Buy the toyota exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust donuts, and also all the hardware.

I hope that someone at Doug Thorley realizes that THE SECOND that these headers become C.A.R.B. legal, every California toyota 4runner v8 owner with an exhaust leak will buy them. It can't be that hard. All that needs to happen is to have the catalytic converters integrated into the headers as a single sku and then get them approved. This "welding on the old cats" thing is probably what is stopping the carb approval, if the part has even been submitted to the air resources board at all.

I am not worried about the visual, just the actual smog. I hate the idea of welding on the old cats. Does anyone make a cat that we could use rather than welding on our old ones?

OEM Toyota cats are very high quality and should last the lifetime of the car. I reused my 130k cats and they still appeared like new internally.
I doubt any aftermarket cat is on par as far as quality in comparison to OEM Toyota parts.
Now this said I was not looking to squeeze every last ounce of power out the car, I want durability and reliability over 5 extra hp

Take it to an actual mechanic shop? Have a mechanic install the headers and drive it over to the exhaust shop to have the rest welded on. I'm guessing it's not too difficult to clear the codes from the lack of o2 sensors.

This wont work, the headers/cats need to be off the car for welding. Just no way to weld all the way around if installed on the car.
I saw my OEM cats and they also appeared new internally too.

The stock cats are for stock exhaust and are high quality and fine, but why in crease the exhaust flow and efficiency with headers and choke it down with stock cats. It's a personal choice but I went with new cats, High Flow Flowmaster and got performance and MPG increase. Plus you don"t have to cut the old ones apart and hope they mate up fine with the Headers, new ones allow you to trim and fit them only having to add the lower stock flange...

Am actually a little surprised that some enterprising soul hasn't set up a jig and offered to turn these out in a flange to flange configuration.... Would think there is a market out there that would pay for those over the current DT configuration....
