'05 4R - Intermittent A/C Issue

This is my first time posting in the forum and I hope I can get some feedback ASAP. I have a 2005 4Runner V6. Several months ago I noticed that the A/C wouldn't kick on when I tried to turn it on. I live in AZ so, we do sometimes need our A/C in the Fall/Winter months. I mentioned it to the husband and he checked it out. Thought there was a loose connection to the motor since if we kicked up underneath of the dash on the passenger side, the A/C would then kick on. Well, I've been doing that for a while and now that it's in the 90's, the kicking up under the dash isn't doing the trick. The A/C will kick on in the early morning (truck is parked inside of the garage overnight) but, in the afternoon, when I leave work nothing! Also, it will sometimes kick on after driving it for an extended period of time. This weekend I drove to Tucson and when I first left downtown Phoenix, no A/C... as I continued my trek, the A/C finally kicked on when I was about 55 miles away from my destination in Tucson. It's an intermittent thing. Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

"kick on" doesn't mean much... describe what's going on more clearly. fan blows but no compressor engagement? fan blows compressor engages but air isn't cold? no fan blowing at all?

Sorry.. 'kick on' means that the A/C starts to work again... fan blows, air is cool and can be adjusted, etc. It will go from not working at all (no fan, no noise or anything) to just working as if there was no problem. When it's on, there's no difference in how cool it gets or anything like that. The main problem is not being able to just turn it on and off as I need it. Sometimes it will come on, other times not so much. It seems that when it's parked outside it triggers it to not work.
