'05 v8 4wd Transmission Filter?

Hello all,
I have an '05 v8 4wd and am interested in doing a drain and fill but would like to also change the filter. I'll probably add a Magnefine inline filter as well. My question is: I contacted my local dealer today and requested a pan gasket and filter. They looked up the parts and gave me a price for the gasket but said mine doesn't have a filter. Is this true? Should I call another dealership and double check? I've searched all over the forum and only see people with the non-sealed transmissions dealing with filters. I can't imagine mine not having a filter.

Any help is much appreciated.

Good question. It is a sealed unit and Toyota definitely built it to be not tinkered with. I had my fluid replaced at the dealer in February (original fluid with 110k) and it was fine. They showed me. It was dark, nut burnt.

It could simply be that the transmission is designed to not need a change. They are def. being built better these days. You don't find (in a functioning) all the shavings and crap you would find all the time in older ones.

It could also be why the fluid lasts so dang long.

Anyway. It is a pretty stout design and mine runs excellent and I only had the dealer do an exchange.

If you do a drop though, make sure you read up in the service manual. The transmission has a pretty intense procedure to check for the right fluid level and since there is no dipstick it is really critical you follow it.

In case anyone is interested the part is listed as a strainer and not a filter. The lady wasn't sure so she got a mechanic to look with her and found the part. MY local shop says they just clean them but I've had multiple transmissions shops tell me to definitely change it.

I wouldn't change it. It's a strainer, not a filter. BUT, if you are DYIng it and it's easy to access, go for it. I honestly don't think it will make any difference. Stick with maintenance intervals (more important) and you will be good to go.

What does the Toyota shop say? Seems pretty obvious that a transmission shop would be in favor of your generic "change everything" moto. Just curious what an actual Toyota dealer says? When I called around to dealers, making it very clear I had money to spend, I was hard pressed to find one that would say more than "meh, we can take a look". I had to specifically ask for the fluid exchange.

I am glad I did that, but my transmission was driving great before and great after. There wasn't an issue with it.

I don't think I asked specifically about the strainer...be curious to hear what a Toyota shop would say?

Make sure you talk to an actual tech and not the service writer.
