If your 4R is 4wd and has a transer case for 4wd than it is in 4hi all the time, or like the land cruisers say, all the time 4wd. You'll have a turn dial to the right of your ignition where it will stay in 4H with the option to turn it to 4L. You do not have a rear differential lock stock, only a center differential lock.

So mine is all time in 4hi? Can I get a rear diff lock ?

Its a V8 sport ed 4WD, the reason I asked about rear locker is my 05 taco has a rear locker

It's full time 4wd. The only 4th gen that ever had a rear diff lock was the 09 Trail edition and that was V6 only so to answer your question, no, your 4runner does not have a rear diff lock.

It has a center diff lock but that is a completely different thing.

Correct sir, would having a rear diff lock like in my taco make any diffr since im AWD

You know, there's an old saying that if you have to ask how much a yacht costs, you can't afford it.

Not trying to bust your chops here but if you don't know whether you need a rear locker or not - then you don't. ;):

FWIW the center diff on the 4runner is a limited slip and provides pretty good capability both on- and off-road (although I generally lock my center diff once I get onto the dirt.) A locker will help if you are on extreme terrain where you could potentially lift a front and rear wheel simultaneously but I'm guessing you don't 'wheel like that because if you did you'd already know what a locker can do in those circumstances.

Serious question - do you go off road? I get the impression that you don't in which case a rear locker would be a complete waste of money.

Not yet I haven't wheeled it like that I dont want to ne wheeling it and find out I need stuff like that andqif my runner has limited slip like my Tahoe had for get that im locking it thanks for the help.

Adding a rear locker (like an ARB) would cost roughly $1500 - $2000 by the time you added the necessary air compressor, etc. Honestly it sounds like you can get along just fine without it, I'd find somewhere else to spend that kind of money.

FWIW my '99 had a rear locker and while I liked having it, I much prefer the multi-mode 4wd that my current '07 V6 has. It's much more useful in the real world than a locker that I used maybe 4 times in the 3 years I owned that truck.

Why not see what that thing can do first and don't go it alone so its not that much of an issue.

FWIW, I wheeled my 4R just fine when it was stock.

Your 4Runner (just like any other 4WD 4th gen do) has A-TRACK system;
That system is far more superior then limited slip;
It is not as good as diff lock, but it is close... especially since it is working on all 4 wheels not just one diff.

You don't need the lockers but you definitely need a K&N cold air intake and a TRD oil cap for an extra 45 HP.

I've owned one Taco with the rear diff lock and 4 FJ80 Land Cruisers with front and rear diff locks. I can count on one hand the times I used my diff locks. If you're going to actually take it to places that you will need a locker, you're probably going to need a lift and bigger tires worse then you'll need a locker. When I use to hit some rough trails in my Land Cruisers, I rarely needed to engage the lockers, mostly when I got in a rut and got a tire on one side off the ground. That being said, I'm looking for another FJ80 Cruiser and won't even consider one without lockers. Will I need it that much, probably not but it sure is nice to have when you do. I also found out that the rear locker in the Taco was just a capable as the cruisers with front and rear lockers. Unless you're rock crawling, front and rear lockers are not really needed.
