Gas pedal

Problems with my new to me, '08 4Runner. The gas pedal. Where I sit, where my foot goes, and where the gas pedal goes do not agree. OK, it's widely known that the best ergonomic placement is hinged at the bottom, so Toyo mounts it high like 60s Fords, he says rolling his eyes.

But really, I found it hard to keep up with my wife in her BMW 525it touring, the one with the baby engine, on the drive home from purchase, not because she was going so fast, but because my ankle didn't want to bend past 180 degrees.

I see there was recall where apparently they chopped off the gas pedal, and it does in fact look like it was emasculated, but I'm not sure a longer pedal would really be better, it feels like the angle, not the length, not that the cut piece makes it any better.

I briefly had a Prius loaner years ago that seemed, but wasn't actually, gutless, as opposed to a different first gen Prius that was absolutely gutless, anyway, the one in question had a pedal travel of like 8", further than my ankle wanted to bend. I guessed at the time to promote MPG. Or is that just the way they do it?

My '03 had the gas pedal recall done. They literally cut the bottom 2 inches off. Apparently the longer pedal would jam when the carpet rolled forward. Like you, I did not like the pedal feel and in fact it was uncomfortable on long drives. I got lucky at the junkyard and found an unmodified gas pedal which extended much closer to the floor. I replaced carpet with Weathertech which stays put and does not interfere with the longer pedal. The pedal is comfortable now.

OK, good, at least it's not just me.

More questions though, I doubt I'll be so lucky as to find an unmodified pedal as the only 4runner in the local P and P is a think a '94. Now, since this is a drive by wire, is the pedal an integral part of it, or separate or what?

I've got an assortment of ideas, probably none of them good, ranging from an overlay/extention to mounting a completely different pedal on the floor to have it push down on the factory pedal. But even I see possible issues with that, not that I'm excluding it.

Whatever you do, get rid of the carpet. WT does not fit very well but it stays put. I would try Husky floor liner which is less money.

I am SOOO glad I didn't opt for the recall and just have the original pedal. I got the CatchAll carpeted floor mats and cargo mat for my 4Runner when it was new. I've never had a problem with the pedal sticking even though the floor mat's openings to secure it to the floor didn't line up.

I'm seeing pedal assy's on ebay for between $50-100. One of those things which are cheap if they work and expensive if they don't.

Since I guess they don't often fail with out a sawzall at work how often do they fail, considering it's likely a likely dead in the water if they do fail, electrically.

In case I wasn't being clear, should I be worried about an ebay replacement?

What is the seller's scorecard?

Whatever I but off eBay, I want it to be returnable and the seller must have a high 90% satisfaction rate. I have bought a few used parts from there and haven't had any problems.

Ebay sides with the buyer almost 100%. Buy within U.S. from a parts reseller specialist. You will have no problems.
