So I have been good to my 4runner. 167k miles. Bought it at 152k mostly highway milage guy was traveling for work. All oil changes and maintenance on time and documented. Plus scheduled services.

I don't romp it.
I wash it after I go fishing at the beach.
Pretty much all stock 2008 v8 limited 4runner.

Looking at buying a house and get blindsided by my
Vehicle going into limpmode leaving a pinball get together at 1am on thanksgiving morning.

Well I drove it to oreillys in the am and halfway there....
All of a sudden, full power back, limp mode gone.

I had them check the codes and p2440 and another for a bank 1 stuck open.

While I was there, topped up the oil (almost to oil change), splash of coolant, new "oem" style gas cap, and air intake filter.

Pulled the neg term and check engine light gone. Still full power drove about 40 miles and all good no lights then parked it.

I contacted sly for his kit and it should be on its way...
A godsend this guy.

I do not use this forum much, but the information here and great people make it an invaluable asset.

I will update this with the progress of my kit install and a video if I remember .....

It's hunting season.... And vehicle is grounded :(

I am out of warranty, and still owe about 5k on this baby.

Xreas are not leaking that I have noticed...

Is there anything I should be looking for at this vehicles age?

The idler and tensioner pulley are on my list, all recommended services have been performed, had the rear driveshaft replaced last year under warrenty with the "fix" from the service bulletin.

Front wheel hubs and bearings were replaced when I bought it in '16.

I know the timing belt and water pump have not been messed with at all.

Recommendations?

Hey I have this same problem. I leave the Bluetooth OBD dongle in the truck and have to clear the codes when limo mode happens. It only really happens when the temps are below freezing. Can’t wait for it to creep back up here soon.

No idea what it is yet. I have the sly bypass installed too. Once symptoms return I’ll take it to a shop to diagnose.

Anybody having other insight would be nice.

Otherwise, sounds like your taking care of business. I did the tranny fluid replacement, diff gear oil replacement and a few others. If I remember tonight I’ll lookup my maintenance file and pull the list of stuff I’ve done.

Are you sure #1 it installed and powered correctly? And #2 the flaps were closed?

i followed the instructions it came with. dont recall any of that. i'm not sure on anything. i got back from the beach and tried to clear all the sand off the skid plates, must have missed a heaping pile and on startup i presume it pulled sand in and broke a blade or a piece of foam due to the noise.

i installed the bypass maybe a week later, without driving it at all in between and the noise was gone and it worked great until the freezing weather came.

According to my records it didn't actually throw P2440, or i just didn't write it down. It threw P1442 & P2441 initially and now throws P2445 very often when its cold.

i really dont know what to do, honestly.

on another note, other little maintenance things i've done include:

swap over the synthetic oil

cleaned up the throttle body (so damn dirty)

5th Gen brake upgrade (thread in 4th gen section) - stops or slows the rotting of the calipers and upgrades the bore size and rotors. did a brake fluid flush during this too.

power steering flush - thank god i chose to do this without needing to. once i cracked everything open i realized the "level" on the fluid container was just dried black gook and there was barely any fluid left. simple to do with ATF.

new prothane sway bar bushings - tightened things up as good as it could with stock suspension

items on deck: steering column u joint & yoke replace, complete suspension replace and if the suspension replace goes well and i decide to long term keep her i'll probably do the DT headers as i can't stand the tick anymore.

hope this helps...

I thought I had mine installed correctly as well but I got someone else to help start the car while I checked the install with a multi-meter and noticed no voltage coming through. Getting the wire under the fuse was my problem, I think it took me like 3 attempts till I got it connected right.

It is weird you'd have problems in the winter because the bypass makes the car think its cold.

i will have to double check the voltages, but i do remember doing this (mostly to reverse engineer the bypass for own personal knowledge) and it was fine. even my DMM would register the switchover.

yes, very weird. thus why i'm stumped. i really tracked when it would throw the codes, even days it was 32degF it wouldn't, but at 31degF or below it would. it also doesn't throw immediately, could be 20 minutes into my commute or an hour into my drive back home.
