1 year later!

well i took delivery of the t4r one year ago today. can't believe how fast the year went by. just wanted to share my first years experience with the 4runner. I couldn't ask for a better car. It gets me to work every day, in some of the worst snow that we had last winter. (i also work way up in the mountains )I pulled out 5 cars last winter. the 4low with the V8 is a beast. ive taken it on about 500 fire calls. its been to all of new england and into canada. i've towed a 21 boat from connecticut to vermont. Also got my first speeding ticket in it. Im not the original owner, but very soon after i bought my 2005, my boss bought 2009, the difference in quality and drive was minimal. It still feels like a brand new truck. being the first car i ever took out a loan on, and the first car i ever bought with under 100k miles on it...i feel like i made a very smart investment. impressions after 1 year of being a toyota owner, i will never buy an American car again. I came from a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. its like night and day. I would like to thank everyone at T4R.org for all of their advice and helping with questions or problems and ideas for making the truck my own. We do own one of the best trucks on the road and i can't wait to drive a 5th gen.

never forget FDNY 343. may they rest in peace. god bless the families that lost their loved ones 8 years ago. they will always be remembered.

One Year With A 4Runner


I had a new 2005 SR5 (V6, 4x4) that I leased for three years & 35,000 miles. It was trouble-free, for the most part, never left me sitting, never failed to get me where I was going and was a good example of an "overbuilt" vehicle. The suspension parts, ball joints, springs, etc., etc., resembled a 3/4-ton pickup truck; rather than a mid-size SUV.

I was pleased with it in most every way, except for having to put gas in it. Yeah, I know it was no Prius, but the trip computer sure was a bit more optimistic than really calculating miles driven versus gallons consumed. I think it would be great if Toyota offered a thrifty turbodiesel (25 mpg+) for the US market, but I doubt that will happen.

The 4Runner is an excellent vehicle for taking long trips, as there is plenty of room for everything and it flat-out hauls ass on the highway. I took it to Michigan and back three times and it will comfortably run at 75+ mph all day long.....although you will burn up some fuel doing that!

I would recommend the 4Runner over any of its competitors, as there really is no comparison. The 4.0L DOHC V6 is all you'll ever need (in my opinion), although you can get a 4.7L DOHC V8 as an option. Of course, the V8 will mean that the 4x4 model will be in "full time" mode, instead of having a 4x2 setting like the V6.

I only went "off road" with it one time, and that was just a rough gravel road on the way to my son's Cub Scout campsite. I drove it two or three times in snow (as we rarely get much white stuff here in VA), and it wanted more.

The 4Runner would have taken a lot more abuse than I ever gave it - since they are so well constructed and feature plenty of "tough" parts for serious off-road use. Only a billy goat can take rough terrain better than the T4R!

If I am ever in the market for such a vehicle, the 4Runner will be at the top of a very short list; and I also am eager to see what the 5th generation version will bring to the table.

P.S. My leased 2008 Mustang GT will leave my hands in January, so I am going to see what is out there. I am wide-open regarding what I may purchase or lease.....so who knows?

It's the best vehicle for snow and ice I have ever driven. Comfort...I drove from Atlanta to Anchorage, Alaska and spent over two weeks driving with no butt sores or back trouble....or car troubles! I loved the 4Runner so much that I went out and bought another one. My wife can't have all the fun!
