16 mpg!

Let's not even talk about it. I'm not lifted, stock size tires, all maintenance up to date and then some and I can barely average 15. And I'm 34 years old with a very light foot.
My '99 that was lifted with bigger tires got better mileage.

I know this thread is very old but i found my issue.

yeah...

so im sharing so that everyone can laugh at me. So i learned its very important to read the manual on how your 4wd works....so that you don't drive the first 600 miles of your vehicle in 4wd mode......

....yeah....so there's that.....

I turned 4wd off and it runs great now lol...

So in other news my 4wd works awesome....even at like 75 mph on the interstate...

when we bought it and tested it out and all it was already engaged. when i clicked the button off the lights started flashing and because im mildly re****ed i figured "Oh that means now its locked in.."


TL;DR I caught a giraffe in my backyard and my truck gets great gas mileage when not in 4wd mode 24-7

Not picky on you at but can you please tell us more. Was your 4WD light on this whole time? Was it off but the 4WD engaged? Very curious as I get terrible gas mileage too and I can't figure out why.

I drive like a grandpa never above the speed limit and slow and steady acceleration no climbs just flat driving all city bunch of stops and traffic lights a full 18gal tanks give me like 260miles so about 14.5mpg, all I have is a lift and regular 265/75/16 stock tires,trd supercharger with urd 2.2 but I rarely hit boost, the 4wd is always off and I do regular maintenance, i havent dont any highway so I dont know a mix mpg but it really sucks city... I use 93oct premium gas too cause of the sc and smaller pulley. No add weight from armor justbme as a driver almost never carry passengers. But if I wanted a gas saver I would have gone with a prius I love my 4runner and knowing it can be fast when needed and also offrd capable.

All this MPG talk is scaring me LOL

I just ran my 01 Sport 2WD for 335 miles on a full tank. So I can't really see how some of you guys are only averaging 16 mpg. Either a tuneup or something needs to be done.
And my milage is based mostly on hwy doing between 70-80 mph.

Im running 10w-30 compared to some of you guys running 5w-30. Might not make a difference but doesnt hurt to change the oil and see if that makes a mpg difference.

Im running 10w-30 compared to some of you guys running 5w-30. Might not make a difference but doesnt hurt to change the oil and see if that makes a mpg difference.

My maintenance is beyond up to date. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, PCV Valve, O2 sensor, oil change, driveline fluids, MAF & TB cleaned all with in the last 4-5 months. I just get terrible mileage out of this one for some reason. My '99 that was lifted and had bigger tires got a lot better mileage. No idea why.

Way better mileage!

Started running ethanol free gas in my 1996 v6 Runner with 180k on it and I'm getting between 21-23 with mostly hwy....a little city mixed in. These engines seem to like straight gasoline better than an ethanol blend. I keep my speed down around 72-74 on interstates here in so miss.

That's comforting to know I'm about to drive my 4Runner cross country (picking it up), so am looking forward to seeing what kind of gas mileage I can get on the highway @ 70-80 MPH.

I've read many places that people can get as much as 24 MPG on these things... possible? yeah, possible.
