2000 Limited Multi Mode Clunk

Hi all,
In my 2000 Limited I have the multi mode transfer case. In the 4Hi unlocked mode, I get a loud clunk or bang that will shake the car when driving after letting off the gas and re applying the throttle. It clunks both when I let off the gas and again when I press the gas. It doesn't do it in 2wd or in 4Hi locked mode. Any ideas on what might cause this?

I have this in my '96...

More of a thud when reaccelerating after coasting.

I've not isolated it yet as I rarely drive in 4H, but like you it doesn't do it in RWD.

I suspect its play in something forward of the transfer case, and as the centre diff equalises eveything that takes the slack and causes the thud when the slack is taken up.

Check for play in the prop shafts and CVs, make sure teh grease points are greased, check for play in the front diff... (I say all ths like I've done these to troubleshoot mine... it's err on the list).

If It's not that, it's going to be something diff related in the transfer box.... I hope not. - Not sure how string these are or how much power they can take. I've used mine in H4 on the drag strip before now!
