Rear ends me at a stop light. He was passed out at the wheel and the witness said she was clocking him at 60mph when he struck me without so much as touching the brakes. I do believe the spare tire and truck frame the 4runner has saved my life. Now I have to fight to try to get it totaled. It's gonna be close. He was driving a Taurus which needless to say is totaled. No matter what, I think it's goodbye to my 4runner and another is in the future. I may decide on a V8 this time but really not sure I like the idea of full time 4wd. Wear and tear plus gas mileage would be factors of full time 4wd.

I have an 04 V8... I am averageing 17 mpg on local trips 5-10 miles max and speeds no higher than 45.

When I was traveling to work 20 mile commute, 1 stop light, 65 mph I was averging 20 mpg.

Yes!!! Being OK is a BIG plus. It could have been disastrous. I could have been on my Harley and been a pancake. I am thankful for that.

Glad you're ok and the 4Runner did it's job and protected you. Another great selling point on the 4Runner is that it has usually faired well in crash tests.

I'm always afraid of being rear ended on my bike too. I always keep it in 1st at traffic lights and look at my mirrors to see if the person coming up behind me is slowing down. Once they stop, I can relax a bit. On a few occasions I've had to move up a bit because I wasn't comfortable at the speed they were closing in on.

99% of the time I'm glued to the rear view mirror (especially when on my bike). The plain fact is this guy was in the other lane doing 60 when he drifted into me. There's no way one could ever get out of the way fast enough by the time they realized what was happening especially being dark out. At the particular time I was playing with my new nav system and never saw him coming. In a way I'm glad I didn't. That too may have saved me some injury but you never know about that.

same happened to me in my 97 4Runner. drunk hit the back without stopping. the tow hitch shredded the Yugo that he shoved into me and his car shredded the back of the Yugo. Tow hitch saved a lot of aches and pains and U R OK which is the real deal. Just tell your insurance company that if they don't work with you and total it, you will retain an attorney and see an orthopedic specialist.

good to hear that you are ok. 60mph impact at the rear..... i can't imagine it. back in my high school age, my mom took me to school and we t-boned a integra at 30mph, the Teg damaged bad! at 60mph..... deng!

Nope. No insurance. No speak english. Hate to say it but one of those senerios. Don't take me wrong as I am not predudise at all. Just one fact of the accident. The Tarous was a complete wreck. Front end pushed back to firewall almost. The 4runner really does'nt look that bad but I know it's worse off than it looks. You guys know how strong the front seats are. Well it actually twisted my seat out of shape. I'm a little heavey (230) but not so much that you would think the seat would get out of shape that bad. In fact it knocked the power seat button partically off the switch. And the floor mats shifted on the floor. I noticed that the next day. I'll try to post some photos or put up a link where they can be seen. Don't have any of the other car though.

You can kind of see how the seat twisted by looking at the headrest in the 1st photo. Have to say these shots do NOT do/show the damage as in looking in person.

You can see how high up the body's pushed in this photo. Keep in mind my runner is NOT lifted in any way. Springs stretched???? And these are the 18" wheels.

That is a hard hit. the fact that your tow hitch which is a secure part of the frame should qualify you for a total loss. if the insurance says no, introduce them to the attorney.

The fact that the Toraus hit low and lifted the 4runner up in the air about 2-3' is probably why the damage doesn't look that bad.

Same scenario happened to my buddy. He was sitting at a light and some arseclown rearends him at high speed. Luckily no one was hurt but both cars were totalled.

I can't believe how well the 4Runner took that 60MPH hit from the rear. Doesn't look like the cabin was penetrated much.

Hope you've been to the Dr. to get checked out just in case. Brother was in a bad accident a few years ago and he's still doing some physical therapy because of it. His back will never be the same.

The cross brace of the frame where the hitch attaches was practically torn off the other part of the frame. I'll be going down to the dealer where the vehicle is tomorrow and talk to the toyota techs about it. Hopefully before the adjuster has a chance too.

Spent 6 hours at the emergency room last night. Had no ride before than. Was really hurting. Feel OK now though, well kind of. Back is still plenty sore. The x-rays showed nothing wrong. Perkasets are working as they should.....

Another wierd thing is when you open any of the doors they vibrate like a tuning fork. They do however open and close ok. No clue why they shake though.

discreet injuries in that type of accident can be missed on an xray and are only seen with a CT scan. I would get one.
