Hi Guys,
Been in financial jam for a while so keep delaying new tires. I have a 98 4runner with Racerunner coils in front, OME springs and Bilstein in rear, 265/75-17 BFG ATs on Tundra rims. I think it looks great.....but the tires despite tons of tread have cracks and dry rot. So I have been wanting to change them when hopefully some personal medical and billing issues are resolved.
I have spoken to guys on here who say bump up to 285s so I have more clearance for trails, and that is tempting. I have 5 speed and 4:30 gearing (I think), so the difference between 265 and 285 with the 5 speed and gearing should not be too big a difference of it being a dog, and in 4 low should be fine.
Now, in the past I have been told I will need wheel spacers to run the 285s, especially at full lock and when aired down. With the cost of wheel spacers, and 17" tires being more expensive than 16" a little bit, I was curious if its worth just getting new 16" rims and tires, then selling the tundra rims and BFGs to try to recoup some cash?
Other than looks and price difference, whats up with any pros/cons to 16" vs 17" rims on a 3rd Gen?
I am looking at ATs....maybe the new Fun Country treads, or for some reason I like the looks and curious about the Cooper S/T and its a load range C not E, seems like to get 285s you gotta go E range but I really dont think I need that?
So many All Terrains, hard to think about what is the "best" or more better selections for my truck. I have not been wheeling it, was a commuter rig, but now it just sits and I use my Rubicon around town. So I want to eventually get tires, skids, sliders for the 4runner, and use it as a road trip, trail truck, and mild wheeler. I am a chicken out here in So Ca with this rock climbing hah, even in my Rubicon which is auto, 4.88s, locked both ends and 33s. So I doubt I want to go hard core in the 4runner with stick shift, IFS, and smaller tires. But I would love to explore the state, meet people, enjoy the outdoors. The 4runner is so sooo much more enjoyable on highway and ride comfort, and if I do go camping so much more room for gear.
So yea...opinions on 16" vs 17" rims, and All Terrain tire opinions welcomed.....and even rim opinions, I am not looking to do fancy $200 each rims. And I go back and forth steelies look cool to me, but are heavier and do not balance as well some folks say? Man it gets confusing.....
