$189 to install a TBU?

Hey all, I was at this great specialist alignment shop here in Denver a few days ago (Stan's Alignments). I just replaced my inner and outer tie rods so I needed it.

Anyway, I sort of off-handedly asked how much they'd charge for labor to install a TBU if I brought in all of the parts. $189! Tempting. I rarely have help around to do two person things like bleed brakes anyway, and it feels like just getting it done right would be worth the $189 to me. Is that a decent price?

That's about the cost from a shop for 2 hrs labor. Sounds reasonable if the mechanic is competent.

Doing it right isn't all that hard, it's a pretty straightforward job. If you have the time, it could be a good learning experience.

Its not that difficult of a job if you are even remotely mechanically inclined and can spare a couple of hours to do it. There is a wealth of "how to's" on here, there may even be a video. Spend the money on a bottle of top shelf bourbon instead.

You could do the valve covers yourself with a Martha Stewart tool kit and a torque wrench. The breaks, same, with addition of a 10 dollar vacuum pump to bleed brakes.

If you can change your oil you can do this job yourself.

Well, I've done about 96% of everything on this truck myself (including the ol valve covers but sans Martha Stewart tool kit). I mean, I took it there to get an alignment after I replaced the ITR and OTREs.

The only thing with the brakes is the bleeding. Vacuum pump you say? I have a mityvac extractor.

Bleeding brakes by yourself isn't a problem with a vacuum pump.
