Hey guys , i got a buddy who was planning on doing a 1985 project but has decided not to. So im considering buying it from him 4,000? its manual with original a/c not working. Everything is original in great shape. it has the solid axle and efs. My question is, can i take the a/c from my 3rd gen 4runner and install it in the first gen? i know i can take my 3.4l from my 3rd gen and install it in my first gen but i can't find anyone who has swapped the air conditioner. do you guys think its possible with out tons of custom work?

No. Besides all the wiring differences which I know nothing about, you'd need to fab your own custom bracket and swap the pulleys. Much easier to convert the stock AC to R134a.
Even easier to take the top off and tell the AC to go f&ck itself though.
is the r134a upgrade noticeably better , i live in the valley of los angeles so its hot , very hot for like 4 months out of the year. also i heard the first gen is not has good with heat has the 3rd gen so i was going to do a radiator and fan upgrade , i know on the 3rd gen you can add the tundra radiator and fan , is there similar upgrades for the first gen? , sorry i know its a mixture of questions
I just finished up resurrecting the ac on my 87'. All the parts were there but the compressor was in a box along with all the mounts. I stayed with r12 and it's working great now. To my surprise r12 is available (just check eBay) and all the procedures are the same regardless of refrigerant. Evacuate, test for leaks, oil and charge with Rxx.

You'd pretty much have to swap the stock setup to r134, it's nearly impossible to get r12. But seriously, pop the top and enjoy it. We break 100 here on a regular basis and I've never felt the need for AC as long as the top is off.
The stock cooling system is fine when its kept in good repair. Guys think they want huge radiators and electric fans when all they probably need is a coolant flush and a thermostat.
