1992 4Runner for sale....

Hello all!

I've been reading the forum for a few months now thinking about buying an older 4Runner as a project/fun car. There is a local add for a 1992 4Runner with a blown headgasket. He's asking $800. I can do the work myself but what do you guys think? Good deal or no?

If the truck is otherwise clean and straight, $800 isn't bad. I see you're in Texas, but look very carefully for rust if the truck has been registered in a northern state at any point. Also be sure it hasn't been sitting too long.

He says its been sitting almost a year.

$800 is an ok deal. I'd put a new engine in all together. If its a 22RE they don't like to bounce back from overheating (assuming thats why the HG is smoked). And if its the 3.0, the HG just plain sucks to do. Has a book time of 18 hours.

If I bought it, I'd offer him $500. Put in a used engine (22RE for me) and drive it for 400k miles.

I've been looking around for a new (used) engine. I might go that route just to save me some trouble later.
