I was told by a local mech that my head gasket blew in my 96 4Runner. It is manual w/4whl drive. 3.4 engine. He said to ditch the car.
I want to fix it but cannot decide it I should have it rebuilt or drop a low mileage engine from Japan in.
Issues are finding a good guy in my area to do it either way. Also, the quotes I am getting are really high from the guys with good reviews on yelp and the guys that are reasonable have bad reviews.
1. Can you recommend a good mech in the San Fran/ East Bay area?
2. If it was your car...buy a used engine or rebuild your engine?
I will also replace the radiator and clutch (light) while the engine is out.
I am a transplant from LA and know of a good guy in Canoga Park, Ca but that means towing the car at around 450.00.
At least once a week someone stops by my house that wants to buy the vehicle, and someone tried to steal it once.
