1998 Limited 4runner... to keep or not to keep?

I recently inherited a 1998 Limited 4runner. It appears to be in dire need of a paint job. And there is some issue with the transmission slipping. Once I get down there again I will check the color.

Any idea what a paint job might cost for this vehicle? Based on what I have read the clear coat is failing so there would not be a way to restore the paint job.

There is little to no rust (one spot on the hood).

What are some other common issues with a 4runner of this generation? 170k miles

98 limited 211k

If you haven't, search threads on common things to check, but at minimum, get it on a lift and check underside rust.
I have a 98 with 211k miles, and expect it to last me another 10 years.
If you just want it to look decent for cheap, I bet Maaco can do a cheap one for a couple hundred.

Hello sig,

I gave the under body a pretty good look and did not see any rust. If I'm going to have the car painted, I'd rather make sure it lasts.

The real question is, if I put $3-4k into this vehicle, is it worth it? Or are one of the 1998 4runners on Craigslist for 4-5k already in better shape?

I'm going to drop it off with a trusted mechanic and get a ball park estimate.

I'm embarrassed I never saw your reply 6 months ago. What did you end up doing with your truck?

Hello Sig,

I ended up leaving it to be sold on craigslist. Timing was just off, in the last couple months our other vehicle has been having all sorts of issues.

Maybe in the near future I'll pick up a newer one.
