1999 4Runner Sr5 Undercarriage

Hi Guys, I've been a big toyota fan over the years of the 80s and 90s. I included some pics of an undercarriage of a 1999 4runner. Wanted to get your guys general impression of it. Although it may be tough, but from what you can tell from the pics how bad is it? Any improvements you think I should make to repair or slow down any issues? Thanks

I recently purchased it pretty cheap from a guy leaving the country. The body and interior were in excellent shape.

Any help would be great! I'm a bit new at this but hope to continue on here with the 4runner.

Looks like a bunch of surface rust, hopefully. Get under there with a mask and wire wheel and grind that rust off. Hit it with a rust preventative of your choice after!

Sand blast it all off and recoat.

Check between the Gas tank and rear control arms that is always the worst. Yep run a wire wheel or go to town on some sand paper and spray rust neutralizer first then a couple coats of black spray paint.

I would dump the running boards though not worth the trouble.

I got under mine with a wire brush and some rust converter. Brush off the flaking rust, spray or "paint" on the rust converter and let it do its magic. Then paint it with some undercoating. Worked great for me.

I'd hit it with a flap disk on a grinder. It'll clean it up nicely, just keep it moving. Rust converter and some paint. I used Rustoleum oil based on mine. Brush it on.

like others have said either grind that of with a flap disk or wire wheels and put some self etching primer on that frame, then coat it with some por15, and let that set up. but do it now before its too late

I strongly recommend wire wheeling it all down, then using the 3 step process that POR-15 offers. This process cleans, treats and prevents further deterioration. It takes time to do it right, but worth it. I've done this on a '01 that spent some time around D.C suburbs before moving further south. If treated in time, you'll have a lot more life left in it verses just covering up with paint.

On some of the worst stuff you might want to use a pneumatic air needle scaler before a wire wheel.

i had a rusty undercarriage and this is how i fixed mine , like fiatheart said POR15 is a great product . if you check my thread your ail see pics of what i did to combat rust.
