1999 LTD 4x4 Auto A340F Transmission/Transfer VSS's

So i bought a yellr.com speed calibrator and spent a little more for the plug-n-play harness (3 prong). I look at the transmission drivers side and the No.2 Vehicle Speed Sensor is a 2 prong. Looking at the manual it says there is a No.1 Vehicle Speed Sensor, but the pics are very hard to read (looks like the pass side of the transmission?). The schematics don't show a No.1 VSS, but there is a blurb about disconnecting the No.1 VSS from the Transfer when removing the Transfer.

Does anyone know where the 3 prong No.1 VSS connector is located? I feel like a total nub here.

thanks for all and any help! If you are in CO I will buy you a beers. It's close to wheelin' season.

If you have ABS there is no speed sensor on the transfer case. The speedometer gets the speed signal from the ABS module which calculates it from the wheel speed sensors.

To add to it you will have to tap off the above mentioned wires.

I have a thread in here somewhere going through this when I installed a factory NAV in my 97 and needed to tap into the correct VSS wire.

This. You wire the calibrator between the ABS controller in the passenger footwell and the gauge cluster, which then sends the VSS signal to the ECU.

This is what I did (zoom in):

not being rude or trying to hijack thread....but what is the purose of this? Just trying to learn.
So you can have your speedo read correctly when you change tire size.

I went from the small 225/75-15 tires up to 265/70-17, which is a 12-13% difference in rolling diameter (also went from 3.73 gears to 4.10's). I didn't want my speedo to read nearly 10mph off at highway speeds and I wanted my odometer to keep accurate count of actual miles travelled.

Like phattyduck said it's to correct for changing tire sizes. Because the vehicle get's the wheel speed after the differential any gear ratio changes won't affect the speedometer.

phattyduck, so tap the gray black or just dig in the schematic and look for ABS to cluster wire to tap? thanks again!
Maybe after the combo meter before the ECM?

Gps?

Can you use a GPS to see how fast across the face of the Earth you are going and adjust the Speedo to match? Or does this method "do the math" for you?

I just found my old thread when I needed to find that wire.

You need to follow the SP1 speed input to the ECU and back track it. It changes colors from the kick panel to the speedo and then speedo to the ECU. At least on my 97 it did.

You will need to break the wire going to the speedo and use that as your input wire to your converter module. Then hook the output of your converter module to the other side of the wire going to the speedo.

I followed phattyduck's input and it looks to be correct. Basically it's
4 ABS Wheel Speed Sensors >> ABS ECU>> GR- L wire (Gray-Blue) >> Speedometer (Combination Meter) >> ECU.

The Yellow Box comes in 2 flavors, 3 pin and 2 pin (Official home page of the Yellow Box Speedo Recalibrator) I received a 3 pin "Plug-n-Play" harness so I will gander I received the 3 pin version, but I think I will need the 2 pin version.

I have hooked the Yellow Box blue and white wire to spliced GR-L (and reversed them), but am not getting data out of the Yellow Box to the Speedo via GR-L. I sent then an email so I will have to wait and see.

I think I am doing this right. laf

I never did this but it looks correct to me. Or at least how I’d wire it based on what I know with instrumentation I work on at work.

Yeah, that looks correct.

The Gray-Blue wire gets cut and then you just have to get the input and output sides correct.

Make sure you are getting 12V power with Key-ON for the calibrator.

I emailed YB and they were really trying to help me. Great company.

Without their input--it works now :|
This doesn't make ANY sense to me. This is everything I did:

I went for a drive to get voltage meter readings from the spliced SP1 wire so I know what is happening with the stock wiring/voltage. Once I got my numbers and stopped, turned off the car, I plugged in the YB to get its voltage meter readings and the YB/speedo worked as I drove. I did not change ANY wiring from a few days ago. Nothing. So, long story short, it works.

This is so odd since I tried TWICE a few days ago! Reversing the YB blue/white wires did not work, I made sure I had 12v to the YB (and the lights lit up) and had a good ground. That is why I was so stumped. This has been the wierdest experience.

So, in the future (and THANK YOU EVERYONE), a 99 LTD 4runner 4x4 with ABS needs to go through the GR-L (SP1) wire and not a speed sensor on the trans. Everything is located at the ABS ECU in the right passenger kick panel. It's no more than a 10 min job. Who do I owe a beers?
