Found a set of 199mm calipers and 231mm calipers. both have around 100k miles on them but I have 16 inch wheels. I saw where to grind them down and don't have any fears of doing so. What would you do?
199mm or 231mm I'm about to purchase

Well, I would say 231mm if you have a choice, but honestly someone is going to have to school me on what that measurement correlates to... It must be the length of the caliper because our rotor diameter doesn't change with the upgrade = 12.5" (318mm).
The 199mm length caliper must be small enough to fit behind the wheel w/o grinding whereas the 231mm encroaches into the back of the older wheels.

I did 199 because I hardly doubt there will be a noticeable difference, and you don't have to fuss with grinding 5 wheels, and then worry about any aftermarket wheels you may want.

Yes, exactly, i have to get the tundra rotors too which is really the whole point...the rotor upgrade. I just need the calipers that fit the rotors with the 231mm being the best but probably not neccessary for me. It's called the tundra brake upgrade.
Former fzj80 owner and my name is Cory and J being my middle initial. At the time I decided on my username I didn't know the difference between a Fzj and Fj80...see avatar. I'm on other forums so I just kept the same name.
I know and the 199 are cheaper. Thanks for pushing me in that direction as I was already leaning that way but kinda wanted to go big, lol.

Ah, didn't look closely enough at your avatar... Same here, started on 'mud when I had my 2 LC's.... One FJ62 and one FZJ80.

I have read on T4R before that if you are going to do it that you should just go ahead and do the 231s....I have no idea b/c I haven't done either...but when I asked Rock Slide he said he wished he would have done the 231s.

I went with the 231mm Calipers myself figuring due to I tow a bit I wanted that extra braking power, and I had already upgraded to the FJC 17" rims, so the 231mm fits nicely underneath. From now experience towing a 1 ton trailer behind the T4R I absolutely LOVE the 231mm brakes. I don't know how the 199mm would compare, but I definitely am glad I went with bigger.
However, if you're sticking with your stock 16" rims and don't need to be towing anything big, 199mm calipers would probably work just fine for you. Good luck with your decision and mod! It's definitely worth it.

Well I just got back....went to Anniston to get calipers and rotors and picked up part of a roof rack that I needed while I was there. I ended up getting the 231's cause I know me and I'd always contemplate whether I should have went ahead and got the 231's....spent an extra $15 each for both calipers vs. 199's. Now I get to contemplate why the hell didn't I just get the 199's when I start grinding away on my wheels :ybrick:

I think you're right....I know I read somewhere that those wheels were good to go but I don't know who said it.

Yes, those wheels are fine w/o cutting with the 231mm calipers.

Probably will be a tedious job but not difficult... My only worry with that is making sure the cuts are all the same amount of material so you don't throw off your wheel balance... or have them rebalanced after you're done.

Anyway, you didn't see my thread about how my Duratracs suck did you? LOL! I don't even worry about wheel balance anymore...probably couldn't even tell the difference.
