Taking a look at one tomorrow.
Looking for some tips to look at while checking it out.

It's the 1st gen gray one.

Also wondering I know lots mention to run one with the fuel upgrades and such. But I don't got the cash to do so.
Wondering if I can jut bolt on and be good with running stock boost and upgrade fuel and such later?

Im assumig should be fine since there are so many out there that come stock from factory and don't have fuel upgrades or anything different then one with stock motors?

Thanks!

Just check the cone for any play, if its loose itll need to be rebuilt by magnuson. I ran a 2nd gen supercharger on one of my runners for a long time without any fuel upgrades and it was fine as long as you didnt boost it hard at low rpms (mine was a 5 speed) and waited for the motor to get into open loop. If you dont drive it like you stole it all the time youll be alright, just make sure you use nothing but 93 octane in it.

How many miles on the S/C ? Why are they selling?

Additionally, just so you know what your cost are to rebuild check with Magnuson, last I heard it was about $650 plus. Your gonna love the exta power however take the advice given if you wanna keep your engine together and running smoothly. If you decide to put a fuel management system and you don't have an EGR get URD 7th injector kit. I have the 1st Gen with the 6th injector kit w/ larger injectors which is complicated to tune but doable. An Air/Fuel gauge is a good thing to have as well. Lastly, on the 1st gen the pipe for the boost by-pass valve, not sure what it is called, the hosing has a gasket which has been known to fail and cause a vacuum leak. Having knowledge of this I've tried to find the gasket and can't find it anywhere without getting a complete rebuild. Perhaps someone can chime in on where to find just the gasket. We have tried Toyota without any luck.

Aloha for now.........8sm

I see what you me. But when you say don't boost hard at low rpm, I'm a little confused. If I keep the pulley and everything stock should be okay right? I'll try to resist hammering down a lot :)

Damn, how can I check for that by pass if it's still good?

Thanks for info guys!

Just came back from checking it out. Really good codition. Little less then 20k on it.
Got all original TRD stuff with it. Like throttle body gasket, check valve, 3 supercharger belt. All TRD packaged. :)
I'm pretty stoked but don't want to make a quick decision yet.

Got all the bolts and hardware. Comes with boost gauge and pillar pod.

Only thing missing is hoses if I don't use the stock and also intake gasket which I can buy from Toyota since it's not supercharge specific.

I'm sure the low miles on the s/c is reflective of driving around an island. As far as the by-pass housing, I would not be to worried considering the low miles. There are alternative methods to remedy the problem should it occurr. As far as testing the area if the gasket is properly sealing. While the engine is running spray the s/c and all vacuum line with brake cleaner fluid. If the engine sputter that is the area where you have a vacuum leak. Either tighten, replace or seal the affected area to fix the leak.

One issue you will want to monitor/ control is the leaning issue that may occur. Read as much as you can on here, yotatech, speedy garage and URD website for great information on s/c.

There are different options on fuel management systems. Some are proven some are experimental and not so much. Before you try a new system check with the providing vendor for proper application. Most of us use URD, Gadget knows what's up, google for his tuning information. There is also speedy garage he has excellent write ups on running a trd s/c. Googles your friend.

Hope you buy the s/c, you will like the noticeable power difference. So Ono...LOL

Thanks man. Yea I've read pretty much every article on SC for the past week.
I'm just thinking to my self while yes I agree that fuel upgrades and all that will optimize the superchargers potential. Is it technically needed? I think like that because those who buy the 4runner but dont mod it or go on forums that buy it superchargered from Toyota.

So if they can do that for now around and hit over 100k miles at least then should be pretty safe as a bolt on item right?

I can't afford to drop that much just to SC and if it comes down to that I need around 1k additional on fuel upgrades then ill pass on the SC. It will suck I know Ill probably regret but I also have to be smart with my finances especially at times like this.

If anyone can confirm that bolting it down and still being able tO run it without damaging much and pinging out. Then I'll be more then happy to buy it. I'm really stoked and really want it. But I'm taking my time before buying it just so I know I'm not making any irrational decisions.

I had one on a 99 Tacoma years ago. It was a 1st gen and with no additional fuel upgrades. It worked great for the 17k I had the truck and the 40k before I bought it. Just use the premium gas and don't stomp on it all day long. People drove with just the s/c for years before the upgrades and everything will be fine. Once I have the money I will get a s/c and just use it while I slowly upgrade the rest of the stuff.

Plus you will ever wonder why every 4runner didn't come stock with the s/c.

Thanks man. That's comforting to hear... So is it safe to wot once in a while? :)

Also if you don't mind why did you get rid of yours? I'm wondering why mines has so little miles as well. For it's age. Should I change the oil before I put it in?
If so where can I get the nose oil kit.

If I get the supercharger :D

Yeah I would WOT it pretty frequently. I got it my senior year of high school and came from a 22re 87 4runner, so a mighty big HP boost. I would open it up at times going up highway 5 on my way to Chico, which is just a long stretch of nothingness. It handled it well and I got rid of pretty much all the pinging just running premium.

I got rid of it because my Tacoma wasn't the greatest on gas (15 city, 19 highway) and I was traveling from school to home a lot (long distance girlfriend ugh). I still kick myself for selling it, but it was the best financial decision. I would have no hesitation putting a s/c straight onto a motor.

Yours probably has so little for what 8sm said. You live on an island. The guy probably just had it on there and would tow or just have fun with the extra power, but didn't drive it much. I drove 10k last year, but that is because I got a new job 15 miles each way and I had to drive my bosses kids all around. Some people just don't drive much.

I would definitely change the oil because you have to take the s/c off on the 1st gen to change it. It is underneath so better to replace it while it is off the truck.

I had a chance to buy a 2nd gen with 8k on it for 900 recently, but I didn't have the money. Really wish I did, but o well. Skidpalace ran just the s/c alone for years and his s/c and engine is fine. People try to scare you into getting all the upgrade, which are a good idea, but not absolutely necessary. If you want to get the most out of and life then it would be a good idea to upgrade, but 10-15k of just the s/c is going to hurt anything.

Also you are a strong man for checking out a s/c and not buying it on the spot. I probably would have bought it and installed it on the spot.

Since the recommendation is to change the nose cone oil every 30k and you have to remove the supercharger to change the oil on the 1st gens I would definitely change the oil before putting it on the truck. I have a 1st gen and it is great. no fuel mods yet but about to get a 7th injector set up. if you ever need to get it rebuilt look at High Speed Labs in MO. they do complete rebuilds including impeller recoating and return shipping for about 650. Mine should be back this week. :driving:

Sweet. Any DIY on changing the oil? Also any recommendations to where i can buy the oil kit from?

Thanks for all the helps guys.
I picked it up today :) after one week of deep thought I'm now ready to prep everything to get this done.
Looked at it today and nose pulley is solid.
Everything in great condition. Thanks everyone

Btw when installing do you guys know if the current stock hoses are reused? Cause the guy selling doesn't have the hoses. Otherwise I'd have to buy new ones. :(
Also it came with a TRD thermostat assuming that's a colder one? I'll cross reference the part number.

Couple more questions. Should I change my plugs as well? To those denso iridium ones that I'm seeing?
Or are the NGK R's good enough?

ill have to find the part number again but me and my buddy were running two step colder ngk plugs in our supercharged 3.4's and they seemed to really like it. Ill try to get the number today, i think when cross referenced they are actually for a porche or something like that.

sweet for pretty much just premium fuel and colder plugs should be good? any other things you recommend i do?

here is where you can get the oil and any other parts you might need.

Rolling Performance Home

Also I ordered my 7th injector setup from URD today and was talking to Gadget and he says that the cooler thermostat is a good idea if you live somewhere that it never gets cold but if you ever need to defrost your windshield then stick with the stock:) The two step cooler plugs will be good as well. run premium and it will really help reduce pinging. And keep your ears open to learn when it will ping (radio Low for a bit) so that you can avoid those situations. welcome to the madness of forced induction

so GM supercharger oil is the one to use?
im wondering if thats the case will GM car dealerships carry it as well?
sweet site though looks like they have quite a bit of stuff.

have you ordered from them before?

btw for those who went with the colder denso plugs, did you guys go the ik20 or the ik22s?

Bump, In addition to my question above. I'm about to buy the IK22 sprk plugs but there is no specific one right? As long as it says ik22?
Also about to buy the b&m trans cooler :)

Slowly but surely I'll be supercharged!!!

Yes, all the IK22 plugs are the same. I found them to be the cheapest on amazon when I bought my last year.

I believe that your local GM Dealer should carry the oil. I haven't bought from them because I ended up sending my supercharger out to be fully remanufactured. They seem reputable I have emailed back and forth several times and they were very helpful. I am getting my plugs from URD and they haven't come yet so sorry Im no help there.
