I guess i will share. I traded for this 85 a couple weeks ago. Come to find out the frame and body were a little more rusty than i imagined. The 22re was rebuilt about 10k miles ago and it has lock rites front and rear. When trying to buy a IFS rear, IFS box and IFS hubs from a guy i found out the runner he was parting was rust free so im picking it up this weekend. It has been hit in the front and will need the frame tweaked and all my front end from the cowl forward as well as all my interior and motor trans and t case. Hopefully ill have enough posts soon so i can post the build. The plans go as followed...

Immediate plans:
SAS swap on the 86
Add front innerfenders and body from 85
Swap dash and interior
Swap engine, trans, and t case also install new clutch and input shaft bearing on trans
Install 85 rear springs up front
TG crossover steering
Axle Armor Ect
63in Chevy rears
Twin Stick

Future plans:
35in tires of some kind
Double Cases
5.29 gears
Paint Cream with black graphics
Try not to beat the body to death

I want to build a nice DD 4runner that will be dependable and that i can wheel a little. I have a Samurai DD now that is a real shit box so i want something nice. I have stretched Samurai to do heavy wheeling with when its done. Now for the pictures

The 4runner performed very well on its first real outing with the new setup.

1986 vs 2017

Thought you'd appreciate an original 4Runner vs. a new one. The blue one is owned by the original owner since 1986 and it's been his daily driver ever since. He has over 200,000 miles on it and it's in amazing condition. Mine is a 2017. I park next to him every day at work.

Another 1gen

I’ve got an 89 with the 6 cylinder. The top is off most of the time, I would like to pick up a soft top. I bought a few months ago and keep finding things to fix. Bought it from a mechanic which turned out to be a bad idea. Currently I’m trying to figure out why my 4WD isn’t working. I think it’s my hubs.

Your new 89 is purely mechanical when it comes to the 4wd.

Jack the truck up by its cross member so the front wheels are off the ground. Pop the transfer case into 4wd. The axle shafts should spin when giving it gas, regardless of the wheels turning. This will tell you the transfer case works. If they do not turn then the transfer case has a problem. Now, if the automatic hubs (which were popular on 1989 models) do not work, the wheels wont spin even if the shaft spins. If that is the case, then you should get a hub conversion kit and some cheap manual hubs. You can pull some aisins off another toyota IFS truck, but if you are staying stock tire then WARN, Mile Marker or another will work fine. I myself did a conversion with WARN hubs and they have been great for four years. Put them on, never had to touch them or service them once. The auto hubs are junk and never last thirty years like the rest of the truck. Any good manual hub will last however.

I have done a ton of work on my 1989 so if you have any questions shoot me a message. I know a lot of do and don'ts, tips and tricks.

Also, I have an STC soft top installed and used to have a Softopper so I can give you some info there.

I have Aisin manual locking hubs now. I have jacked up the front end to lock and test them. When locked and I spin the driver wheel the shaft for the passenger wheel spins in the opposite direction like it should, but the passenger wheel doesn't. The other odd thing is the driver side shaft spins with the tire whether it is locked or in free wheel. I still need to test the front drive shaft.

Thanks,

Chris
