1st get to 2nd gen

Recently I was thinking about finding a 2nd Gen to swap my bumper wheels tires, and other accessories to. The reason being is that i would like to have a full roof and 4 doors. I'm bit conflicted because i love my 87, but getting people in the back seats with the hard top on is a night mare! and I've heard the 2nd gens V6s are prone to a lot of problems... so I'm not sure on what to do.

Thoughts?

Than answer is 1st gens rule and the people in the back should be honored just to in one.:rockon:

I like my 2nd gen. It has the 3.0 in it. I haven't had any major problem with it. (knock knock) The 3.0 gets a bad wrap and i have nothing bad to say about mine. It may just depend on how it was maintained. Sure the 1st gens look more bad ass but it is nice having the extra doors for loading people, the dog and anything else.

The 2nd gen is the redheaded bastard stepchild of the 4Runner world. It lacks the first gen's removable top, but doesn't have the 3rd gen's powerplant and better front suspension. It's like the worst of both worlds. I wouldn't get one unless you really just like the body style, because a 3rd gen is better than a 2nd gen in every way.

The key with any 4runner, is the level of care and maintenance it received in it's life. This could be said of any used vehicle. Our 1990 4runner(V6, auto, 4wd) has been dead reliable, with 98k on it, and uses zero oil. It's hard finding a decent 2nd, or even 3rd gen these days. Most have been beaten within inches of death. People give the 2nd gen a bad rap, but I see many a 3rd gens around with a complete sagged rear end in need of a complete overhaul.
Best of luck with the search.
regards

Not to start a arguement but i would disagree. Not because i drive a 2nd but because i have seen my 2nd gen when it was stock keep up with and out wheel my buddies 3rd with a lift and the "better powerplant". Id say it come down to how its been taken care of and what you like. Also the 1st gen IFS is the exact same as a 2nd gen IFS. I know this because all the parts for the lift are the same as well as everything else.

Not the rotors, calipers, etc .According to several parts houses..... ( & that was several different brands as well)

There is a big production change in 92. The engine is slightly different, the headlight, grill, and bumper are different too. Suspension is pretty much the same. Never knew about there being a difference in the calipers and rotors unless i never paid attention when i bought my new calipers.

Yah I've already noticed that several connections are different and there are some other sensors,. But I think the motor is easily swappable.

i would have no idea how easy it is. I do know tha the distributor is different plug wires are different. Timing belt tensioner is different the weird fan bearing thingy is a little different. It's mostly dumb things like you said though i think.

Before then there were different calipers for the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder. After then all came with the "6 cylinder" calipers. AFAIK rotor is the same.

You right. I forgot the 4cyl and 6 cyl had different ones. Well at least i have something on my runner that is better then others

The second gen does tend to get a lot of bad rep. In the end it's all about your opinion of it and how you take care of it. I could probably think of many things I don't like about each generation of 4Runner. If your really worried about the engine you could always get a straight 4 instead of the V6. You could also swap an engine out of another 4Runner (like your 1st gen). Another option is to get one with a rebuilt engine. If you go with the last option and don't run it into the red line every 5 seconds you'll be fine. One recommendation I would make though is get stick shift instead of automatic. Gives you more control of how it's running, improves you MPG (if you know how to drive it for that) and it just feels more powerful. My friend and I compared ours and his just doesn't feel like it has the power mine does

How many people do you shuttle around? Do they want to ride in your rig because it's an awesome 1st gen 4runner? Is it your kids?
Need more info. Friends come and go, family lasts a bit longer. Maybe the answer is just an additional rig, to supplement your needs, while keeping your 1st gen.

Getting my son and the dogs in and out of the back is a total pain, but my 1st ten isn't my daily. I think I've decided that I'm gonna stick with my 1st gen.
