I have one, definitely worth it alone in smiles... assuming you pay a decent price.

Buying one from LCE? That's way way way too much IMO. I bought mine used for all of $1400, had the plenum gasket matched, completely rebuilt with new rotors, nosecone, and bearings by Magnuson superchargers. After that, I still had enough to get the MAPECU2 piggyback computer, 3 pulleys (4,8,10 PSI), 4 Supra injectors, walbro 190LPH fuel pump, and teflon isolator gaskets. I spent about $2,700 total.

$2,725.00 for a kit that only includes what's necessary to install the supercharger on stock fuel system? Holy cow.

Is that on your 99? I'm assuming 8 port manifold? I don't really care to add horsepower to my 00 2.7, but it sure would be a fun thing to do. Do you know if there is a 4 port version available for the 3RZ? I've only seen/heard of it for the 2RZ 4 port or 3RZ 8 port.

Yes, there are 2 versions, the blowers are the same. There are just different plenums available. I've seen people buy 8 port and switch them to 4 port before, and vice versa.
 
I just installed a KO Racing turbo kit on my 4Runner, and I love it. My truck is running on the stock ECU (no aftermarket engine management) at 5psi of boost. It's definitely a lot quicker than it was, and IMO very much worth the money.

I agree with these guys, the turbo is better. Snow junky also mentioned a very valid point.

Living in CA makes it so I have to keep my truck legal. Turbo kits are illegal on 3RZ engines in California. The TRD supercharger has a CARB number and can pass smog at any CA smog shop, that's what sold it for me.

IMO, turbo it, register in AZ or other smog exempt area, done :)

Personally, if smog weren't an issue, I'd piece together a turbo setup, you could make one for cheaper than buying one. With some research, you can choose whatever components you want. My 1st gen is turbocharged with a CT-26 Supra turbo (86-92) and it's a damn good turbo for the $50 it cost me, just imagine the savings of using a CT-26 or similar cheaper turbo (Garrett T3s are all over junkyards around here in old Saabs, Mercedes 300SD, etc.). You'd be surprised how nice of a turbo you can find in one of those old cars.

Intake piping, turbo manifold, exhaust/downpipe flanges, stainless lines, intercoolers, BOV's, silicone hoses and couplers, etc... all very easy to buy online separately. A very sturdy and reliable high boost capable system can be made for much cheaper than the $2300 and $2750 options offered by KO and LCE.
 
thanks for the input everyone, ya 2700 for a basic kit is expensive, the site says you dont need injectors or fuel pump, but i kinda figured you did. id love to buy a used kit, but there hard to find, ive been looking for one for awhile.

did you use injectors from a turbo supra or non turbo? what year? did you have to upgrade your clutch??

I am curious why, not including costs, you feel turbocharging is better. Mostly because I've found non-diesel turbo vehicles don't have the torque curve I would want in a truck. I drove 1st gen Toyota's with the factory turbo and they were anemic. I'm not saying yours is, that was just my experience 25 yrs ago. Superchargers can be geared for power right now, turbos have to wait for the spooling. I know that is a general statement, not speaking from 3rd gen experience. I just find the topic intriguing, and always enjoy getting first hand knowledge.

I agree, turbo's are more for high end, i use my truck only for off roading, i trailer it and it never see's the pavement and looking for torque rather then hp. IMO turbo's require more work with tunning and what not

Yes, my turbo truck is very anemic, but it's not the turbos fault if it's mounted to a 30 year old 8-valve/low compression truck motor.

OP never mentioned he was intending to wheel with the boosted setup until the last post he made, the supercharger is probably the better choice for the immediate torque curve. Heard a lot of good about these roots types and torque. I feel it with my butt dyno.

My personal reasoning was cost, but if you rule that out, my other reasons include potential power and versatility. I don't mind turbo lag, but obviously that is completely dependent on turbo size and usually miniscule with low boost and/or smaller turbo applications... yadda yadda.

Online, there seem to be several people who run turbo 3RZ's... even on stock bottom ends. At that point you could just run more PSI with the turbo than the supercharger is capable (IE: 12 or 15 PSI). 300+hp/tq on a stock bottom end is impressive for a 4 banger that makes 150hp/180tq stock. Then again, I'm not rock crawling with my truck all the time, I use it to commute while wheeling trips only happen every now and then. I don't recall ever having to use boost out on the trail, especially with low range. Usually idle or a little gas is more than enough for my type of wheeling.

The supercharger in question is the Eaton M62 blower, a very small unit... I've spoken with the fellas over at Magnuson Superchargers and they say that 10 PSI is typically the maximum, they recommend no more than 8 PSI. Running 10 PSI plus meth is probably the best option for getting the most from the S/C. I've have yet to run more boost on my S/C but I'm sure I will want more when it's all tapped out. Other qualms include the lack of intercooling after the superheating of air, it is harder to control between the blower unit and plenum (Maybe 6-8 inches between the blower and head? No room for an intercooler). The meth could be a good force against that, but since turbos can run both methanol and intercoolers... well.

Some could argue maintenance is a worry, but I personally find the turbo is easier to deal with since it uses the engine oil and does not require the same periodic maintenance, given it's treated properly and has ample time to cool bearings before shut down, etc. Both are cool in their own ways, but for my own needs, I prefer the turbo.

After all.... I do enjoy both and they're both great performing forced induction methods. If I had a choice, I'd turbo both trucks just to run higher amounts of boost. If the S/C could pump out more, I'd stick with what I already have, but alas, it is limited.

If you had a choice youd turbo both trucks.... Why not sell me your S/C and slap in a turbo, DO IT

I wish I had read this last year! I would have made you an offer on your SC & you could have built yourself a Turbo & put some cash in your pocket.:bounce:
