2000-01- what year to buy?

Im in the market (well probably after Xmas) to buy a 2000-01 4 runner, 2WD most likely.

Wondering what type of mileage is considered high for the 3.4L?

Most of the ones Ive been looking at have at least 70-100K on them if not more.

Since Ive never owned a Toyota before, Ive heard that they last forever, although all motors need maintenece at some point.

Obviosuly timing belts are a big thing on these motors at 60K or above mileage.

what other repair/maintenece items should I be looking for and why is it so hard to get power seats on these things?

Buy an '01 because...

it has an updated traction, stability, and anti-lock system, over the previous years. Look for a Limited, it will have all the options and Leather!

The oil filter is kind of a PITA. The fluids are no problem. Search here for all the info. Good luck!

The recommended timing belt change is 90,000 not 60,000 miles. I would bet that 99.9% of the 4Runners you see with 70 to 100 thousand miles have not had the belt replaced. On my 2001 I have 85,000 miles and I am still on the same brakes. So be prepared to spent a litte money on maintenance.

The biggest change in 2001 was VSC (vehicle skid control) TRAC (traction control even in 2WD version), bake assist and no stick shift and no 4cyl.

As far as lasting, we have a list in our classified section for a 98 with 197,000 miles. This shows they do tend to last awhile and finding one with low mileage is more of a rarity than a common occurence.

One more thing.... about the oil change. It is a true pain in the ass. The oil filter is really hidden, almost impossible to get to.

Local dealer had a 2002 on the lot with 31,000 miles. Stickered at just about $21,000. Didn't last too long on the lot.

So say I were to buy a 80K + mileage 2001, that was well taken care of, what are these 3.4L motors lasting too?

How are the 4spd trans?

* How are brakes on these
(as far as lasting)
* rotors

* paint(as in is it lasting? Alot of US made SUVs had major paint issues ie: Dodge/Jeep)



Im looking for something 2WD as in So Cal , I no longer need 4WD although it would be nice to have on our trips to Big Bear.

I previously owned a 94 Grand Cherokee setup for offroad and when gas prices took a hike, we sold it for a VW Passat.

The Passat is nice, although with another kid on the way, Id like to have another SUV again(besides our Ford Expedition) that my wife drives.

if well cared for, it can last well over 200K.

the trannies are great.

rotors suck in the longterm -- they warp rather easily.

paint is... uh... just fine? i dont know what youre looking for as far as paint goes, but its just fine.

i have over 105K now and have beat my truck offroad, and it still comes back for more with no real issues to speak of.

I have a 2000

I bought a Certified Pre-Owned 2000 4Runner, 2WD with the 3.4L, auto with 64K miles for a little over $15K two years ago.

I changed the timing belt and water pump at about 90K miles.

Main problem I had was with the MAF and A/F (aka O2) sensors and failing the Smog check because of it.

I just replaced the brakes for the first time after about 40K miles of use.

Paint is still great given that I do not garage my truck.

I drove to San Quintin, Baja (Mexico) and came back on the same day without a problem! I've had my share of occasional off-roading and it's been a great truck. I love it!
