2000 SR5 refinishing factory roof rack rails

Does anyone have any pointers or direction on removing and painting the factory roof rails? My paint has chipped off pretty bad and just wondering if anyone has done this before?

I just used tape and newspaper to plasti dip them without removing them.

I'm thinking about using rattle cans, primer and then some sort of black.

I was thinking about using forever black, but I think I want it uniform, since it's a mix of plastic and something else.

I heard taking it off is a pain, but I just got mine in the mail.

It's really easy to do. I removed my entire rack and hand sanded, then used rattle can bedliner with clear coat. You'll need a torx screwdriver from what I recall. I used this opportunity to give my roof a very thorough wash/clay/wax job. When reinstalling, I used gasket maker in the holes where the screws go back in to ensure water didn't leak into the roof.

Take it off and hand it to the powder coat man with a little money


At least that's what I will be doing, our development lab has a powder coat setup and the guy who runs it will powder coat something for a free lunch

Wow thanks guys for all the direction and help! This is very helpful. I like the bed liner spray idea and powder coat but have no idea where to go for powder coating something. I can Google that one for sure.
