2000 SR5 with AC problem - any options besides repairing?

Hello everyone,

I'm the original owner of a 2000 4runner SR5 v6. It has about 335,000 km (208,000 mi). The fan started to make a tapping noise some time ago and the I'm advised that a new compressor, clutch and receiver/dryer are needed to the tune of about $3,000.

I've left it for a few months and the noise from under the hood is getting louder whenever I turn the fan on. The AC doesn't blow cool air which, although it's been hot/humid lately, doesn't bother me as it's a 2nd vehicle..

Am I doing more damage by not having repairs done? Are there any other options to consider if I wish to keep the vehicle?

You might just be low on freon. Get a can of freon with the gauge on it. Cost about $30.00. You might just need to refill it. It depends on how bad of a leak you may have, the refill could last a day,week,months. Try spending $30.00 first before you spend more.

Dont run the compressor any more till you know for sure that you might need freon. The freon acts as a lube for the compressor, and it may be whats causing the noise.
