Considering you posted this in a 3rd Gen forum and they didn't make I4's in 2003, we'll assume the title of your post is probably a typo :D Let us know the real year of your truck and hopefully someone will be able to chime in. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Wish my parents had bought me a car! I wouldnt have complained ever!! hehehe
But seriously, the 2.7lt is still a good engine but if you want the v6, then it would be far easier to sell the whole rig and buy another one. The cost and time for a swap would be the killer here.

Here's my suggestion, go buy your own car and quit whining. The 2.7 is a great motor and to be given a 4Runner, let's just say I wouldn't be complaining about which motor it had.

Considering you' just turned 17, I'll refrain from reminding you not to look a "gift horse in the mouth". The 4 will give you better fuel mileage and will do better at keeping you out of trouble with "speed" and "horseplay". Keep it stock, take care of it and show your parents how appreciative you are buy acting in a responsible manner. Your parents can tell when "i was really bummed out".

The first three 4Runners that I BOUGHT came with the 4cyl and it was a great truck and engine.

You remind me of a video I saw of a girl who's dad, as a surprise birthday gift, bought her a blue convertable and she wanted red and when she saw it she had a tissy fit and was flipping out. Really doesn't make you look good when your given a nice vehicle and you complain about it.

I test drove a 2.7 2000 4Runner before I bought the 2001 V6 model. I can see why your parents got the vehicle. It has anti-lock brakes, vehicle skid control, good safety record and NO power. On a 2 lane road you will not be tempted to pass because of the lack of power. On the positve side, it is a well built engine and it has a timing chain instead of a timing belt.

There are a few mods you can do, a new K&N air filter, power chip, change to synthetic base oil, get a tune up and other little things that may help a little. I belive they make a turbo for that engine, if you have the bucks. I suspect you will have to learn to live with a really great vehicle that is a bit short on power.

I'm a new owner of a 97 limited v6 4runner. I feel as if even the v6 doesnt have enough power. This however doesnt bother me because there are about a dozen other things i like about the truck. however i could not imagine driving a truck this size with a 4 cylinder engine. i would only recommend the 4 cylinder if you lived in like new york city where you do not need to accelerate quickly or if you lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere. reason being, well, you're going to hold up traffic lol.

he asked a question, he didnt have a tissy fit.

I'd say dont even spend money on it. You'll spend so much you could have bought a 3.4

no matter what car forum i go to its always the same thing

its not worth spending mods on v6s to make them as fast as v8 and its not worth it to make a 4 cylinder as fast as a 6 cylinder engine. its a lot cheaper to just buy the vehicle with the bigger engine in the first place.

A 2000 4 cylinder probably won't have VSC, I had one w/ the 2.7 5 speed and ABS and it didn't have VSC. Perhaps autos were different.

Oops, your right. VSC didn't come till 2001. Sorry about that.

the car doesnt have ABS and dont get me wrong im unbeleivably greatful to my parents for getting it for me. I was just looking for a way to get a little more pickup. i love the car and how it drives just wanting a little more push.

To just get a bit more power there's not a lot you can do short of a turbo or supercharger. Search for deckplate, that mod seems to be fairly popular, but don't expect too much. Maybe headers and exhaust, but they get mixed reviews, sometimes you sacrifice low end to get more top end. I was always happy w/ my 2000 2.7, but the 5 speed and 4.56 gears made a huge difference, with an auto I can see the 2.7 Runner as being a dog. What is yours? Must be a really base model if it doesn't have ABS, or is it 2wd?
