2001 4Runner I need some HELP!!!

Ok so I changed my oil a month ago because it started leaking oil. The problem persisted even though I checked the Oil Filter and the Gasket on the plug and replaced both. Oil still leaked at a decently slow rate but my baby started shaking when/or after I got up to 70+ on the highway.

I took it into the dealership today and they ran the diagnostics. (Oh, the check engine light has been on for over a year). They said the Oxygen sensor needed to be replaced so they replaced it. To fix the oil leak they cleaned all of the oil on the undercarriage, changed the oil again and replaced my filter and gasket with a new toyota filter and gasket.

I payed 500 dollars today and sure enough 30 miles down the road the check engine light came back on. I took my truck to AutoZone because the dealership was closed, they ran a diagnostics and said the right bank is leaning but didn't have any concrete information/advise. So I drove home and noticed that the rough feeling of my engine still existed. Sure enough the oil is still leaking AND I checked the little oil-time sticker they put on your window and they put 5w20 in my truck.....

Please any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Did it occur to anyone that the oil may be leaking from somewhere else? Best time to try to trace it to the source is when everything is as clean as possible and oil hasnt gotten everywhere. The different weight oil is not causing another leak. Most likely the original leak wasnt fixed. Anybody checked the valve cover gaskets? Find the leak, fix it, and change it back to 5w-30.

What was the actual code on the cel? Had you not scanned it in a year either? Which o2 sensor did they replace and what brand did they use. Hopefully not bosch. Post the code and we can try to help from there.

But as for the oil leak and everything else, we need more information. Where is the leak coming from? Why was the check engine light let go for over a year? What kind of maintenance has/has not been done on the truck? Etc.?

My main problem is the fact they put 5w20 in my truck when the sticker on my window clearly showed I put 10w-30 in it less than 500 miles ago. I can't find on the receipts what kind of air sensor it was but if I had to guess I'd say he did say it was Bosch, explain why Bosch is bad? The part number for the 02 sensor is 89467-35011. It says and is highlighted on one of the sheets "Client approved sensor R&R and oil change and engine cleaning at 1:30 pm." They said they changed the sensor (It's also refered to on the receipt as the Air Fuel Sensor" and it cost me 212.00 for the part alone yet the diagnostics at AutoZone said the same description as it did before I took it in. I don't have the diagnostics code.

And I TOLD them that I changed the oil less than 500 miles ago; I told them I replaced the gasket on the oil plug and made sure my new oil filter was snug. They told me that there was dirt around the oil filter gasket which I know is BS because I am very cautious when working on my truck, they told me that using a Toyota Gasket and Toyota Oil Filter would prevent the leaks. What is so wrong with freaking FRAM?!

It could be the o-ring for the oil cooler.

With my recently aquired 3.4 runner i noticed my valve cover gaskets were leaking and oil was running down the sides of the engine. As the same with my v6 camry i found the valve cover bolts were loose. I snugged the bolts and degreased the area with some brakeclean and so far it's nice and dry.

That's the least of your problems. Focus on finding and repairing the leak and correcting whatever is tripping the CEL

I'd say the oil leaks at a rate of 1qt. per month. I told the dealership that I had changed the oil and made sure the gasket on the plug and the oil filter were not the sources of the leak. They changed my oil and replaced my filter and gasket (knowing they were brand new) and blamed them on not being Toyota parts. What are my chances of getting them to fix the leak and fix my check engine light problem and towing it for free considering everything? The dealership is 30 miles away and I am scared to drive it that far, this leak should not still be existent and it is their fault I am scared to drive it.

I would try and find the leak yourself; it's usually not too difficult. Just take a look around with a flash light. There are the valve cover gaskets, the front cam shaft seals, and crank shaft seals, oil pan gasket. If those look dry, you could pull your spark plugs. You could have oil leaking past the spark plug gaskets, burning oil, and then contaminating your O2 sensor.

If you'd prefer to have the dealer do it, just top off your oil before you get on your way. As long as your oil registers on your dipstick and you have coolant, your engine isn't in any immediate danger.

Come on man. The CEL has been on for over a year, it's been leaking oil and now you're afraid to drive it back to the dealer? It's an 11 year old truck with a check engine light and an oil leak. You have to be realistic. No way in hell they'd tow it for free.

Take it back, express your concerns in a proper manner, and have them repair it correctly. Getting PO'd, asking for free towing, etc won't get you very far IMO.

Easy for us to say this but too bad you didnt post on this forum first. Bosch are known to not play well as far as o2 sensors go. Do a search here and you will see what i mean. These are not the only make/model they have a bad rep for. And to really make you feel bad, you could have bought the better part, Denso O2, for about $62 bucks shipped tO your door and changed it yourself fairly easily. The 5w-20 may piss you off but it is not the thing you should be most concerned about. Sure, you want to change it and they should do it for free. Forget what you put in it last time, 5w-30 is what toyota recommends and it is written right on the oil cap. But while you are there, get them to find the leak and either fix it or take it elsewhere to be fixed. If you are still getting a code (p0420 maybe?), i wouldnt trust the bosch sensor, i would put a better sensor on it. But you have 2 O2 sensors. Need to know the code to know which sensor it could be. If its not the sensor, it could be the catalytic system. Cheaper to try sensor first. It worked for me.
