Well, I guess you'll never know. I have a close friend who bought his '01 Limited brand new and only put 19k on it for the last 11 years. He has multiple vehicles (all toyota's, sienna, avlon, lexus rx). The 4runner was mostly in the garage. Last month he replaced all tires as they were close to 12 year old. I saw it last weekend. it was like new.

My mother has a 1996 Corolla which has been driven around town sparingly. I think that it has about 35K on it. She is 88 and doesn't drive anymore so she let's her helpers run errands in it.

Okay guys - I sent an email to the dealer that's selling this 4Runner asking about the details on why the odo is so low - and this is their response.
If anyone is in the Westminster or Owings Mills area maybe they could swing by and check it out.
It is $4,000 less than Kelly Blue Book, and unless the dealer is hiding something (there are 11 reports to Carfax) this would be a nice Runner for someone.
The e-locker option on this is very tempting! However my wife would skin me alive and pack the wounds with salt if I came home with another stray vehicle....LOL!!

It's a 2001, it does not have an elocker. It does have an electronic center diff, that's what the button is for, but it is not the coveted rear locker which was available from 96 - 2000.
I'd be worried about all the seals and stuff, that's a lot of time to be sitting.

Thanks for the info.
As for the seals and stuff - that's why if I was in the area I would take a good look up close - maybe a test drive, and have my mech give it a once over.

Not to mention it's from the NE. It might have 20k miles on it, but I promise you that it has 11 years of NE rust along with it.

Again, you never know. My Mom's Camry is in a State that Salts the roads heavily all winter long. She never drove it in bad weather though, and the undercarriage is rust free.
The short trip deal on an older low mileage car was mentioned. When she drove the car, it was 10 miles one way, then 10 miles back, mostly on the Highway. And the oil was changed every 3 months. Since she stopped driving, the miles accumulated have all been 50+ miles at a time.
I change the oil every 6 months, with Synthetic oil. I've had the valve cover off, just out of curiosity, and the engine is spotless.
My point is that not every low mileage older car has been abused or neglected.

I'd definitely agree with you that you never know, but I'd assume that if it was rust-free, that it would be a big selling point that they would mention. For the record, I don't mind vehicles that are from a rusty area, I just have issues with people putting a premium on a vehicle with low miles. I'd never pay a premium for a vehicle that JUST has low miles. It had better be from a rust-free area too.

It does not have e-locker, which is OK. I am not looking to buy...just passing along the info. However, IF i were to buy, then i actually prefer the 2001-2002 3rd gens. Why? A rear axle locker can be added anytime (aka ARB). BUT, 4-channel ABS (vs. 3-channel in earlier 4runners) along with VSC and Traction Control are invaluable and cannot be added aftermarket. You can always buy 1" spacers to lift the front nose or use prior years front springs. Not a big deal. Again, the prior years' advantages can be corrected aftermarket.
As for rust and low mileage concerns, all good points IMO. I would definitely NOT buy this until i can visually inspect it or get a reliable mechanic in the area to do so. It still remains the best looking 4runner (esp. in Limited form) to date IMO. If it is all good AND it is $4k under KBB, then this is a keeper for an enthusiast...if you can put up with the narrow cabin and bouncy punishing ride of a 3rd gen.

It was actually purchased by one of my local yota dealerships. I saw the add on autotrader went to look at it yesterday only to find out it wasn't even there, then I found this thread and it all made sense. Apparently it will be here on monday and I'm the first person who asked about it. I'm definitely gonna go look at it and maybe try and have a mechanic look it over but I doubt they will take what I would offer for it, especially since I know how much they paid.

I'd be curious as to the final outcome. Looking from the outside it does appear at first glance to be a good deal - IF - the dealer(s) are being honest about it.
There is a lot of odometers being swapped out, and that could also be a reason for the apparent low miles.
