2002 4runner won't enter programming mode for key FOB

I posted this in a different thread but I just did this a week or so ago. I had the same issues - it just didn't work. I found trick with using a key in door lock very helpful for old actuators. I also put a new battery in the fob and after five different tries it suddenly entered programing mode. I am not sure if it is reproducible since I plan on getting a second fob but in my case - repeated tries finally worked

Slow locks, nothing works to program remote
I've been searching around the forum for solutions to this and still nothing's worked. I'm experiencing the slow lock issue where after around three locks on the second cycle they just stop fully cycling.
I saw some suggestions here that the answer is to manually move the locks, but I'm not clear if it's just the driver's side door lock that needs to be manually moved or all of them?
Also saw a suggestion to use the key on the outside of the driver's door, but my key doesn't lock the driver's door (only the passenger door).
I'm sort of SOL here. My only other option is heading to the dealer but I'm not sure if they have another way of programming the fob outside of this method.

The dealer will charge $150 roughly, but its what I had to do. All they do it hook it up to the computer, I was in and out in 25 min. I had spent several hours over the past few months trying to get these stupid fobs to link up. Save yourself the headache, go to the dealer.
I'm a little late to the party but you only have to operate the driver door lock manually for it to enter programming mode. Since your door lock actuators are tired I would suggest doing any lock/unlock manually to start with.
Thanks for the note Bad Luck. That easily allowed me to enter programming mode. But now my Toyota Key fobs won’t pair for some reason. I tried holding both lock/unlock for between 1-4 seconds, and then pressing either the lock or unlock for an additional 1-4 seconds. I tried many variations on this but could not get the Toyota fobs to connect. Any thoughts? Part number is bab237131-056. I’ve read all the programming versions and none seem to work. But the truck does go into pairing mode, now.
You're welcome bud. I don't have much experience with key fobs, but I do believe there is a limit on how many can be paired with the vehicle. There have also been some people having trouble with new remotes. Not sure where you got yours from, but it seems amazon and ebay are hit or miss with key fobs.

Thank you for posting this! I'm struggling with getting into programming mode too with my 2002. Nothing seems to work, but I'll give the manual pulling of the lock another try. Really frustrating to not be able to sync the fobs.
On a side note, called two dealerships in my area and they want to charge $200 now. Would really like to avoid having to pay!

Manual pulling of the lock stem wasn't working for me and neither was the key method. Pushed the key into the lock on the door a little and sprayed some WD-40 in. Turned the key a few times to try to get the spray on as much of the surface as I could. Key method worked like a charm on the first try. Programmed two new FOBs.
If nothing is working for you, look up Tom's Key Company. They appear to have a device that they can mail out to you that allows you to enter programming mode. Currently listed at $50 with a deposit. Deposit is refunded after you mail back.
