2002 SR5 4x4 Rear Diff Failure

Here are some pictures of the carnage.

My honest opinion. This runner was abused. The truck is in great shape, the interior is great minus a cupholder but over all the truck was taken care of.


Here is another theory of mine. The springs on the truck are sagging so it is bottoming out quite often. I think that the yaw sensor is tripping up when it bottoms out and cause the traction control system to apply brakes and the throttle to keep it in a straight line. Only a theory though....

The Saga Continues ...

I put new coils on quite a while back which helped a lot. Tires were done so all new tires and an alignment. This was just under 6K miles ago.

Well about a week ago we realized the rear tires were toast! Mostly outside wear on both tires. Little worse on the drivers side. Started making some measurements and it seems that the axle housing is bent. Both tires are toed in, drivers more than passenger side. Also a bit off camber. Don't know how this did not get picked up earlier.

Looking for a rear end. 2002 4x4 Sport, 16" Tires, 4:10 gears.
Seems this is hard to find around here and I'm a bit concerned this might not be the end of the pain so I'm also debating cutting our losses and possibly unloading.

Your truck didn't look like it was trail ridden at all. I know that you bought it second hand but it could have been in a bad accident and repaired but everything looked straight (from what I remembered).


I remember now, the axle was replaced as an assembly. It could have been damaged on the salvage car.

I have an axle housing that can use your axles, brakes and diff. It is in good shape. I will let you have it for $75.

I was making measurements after looking at the tire wear.
About 3/4" narrower measuring across the front of the rear tires vs across the rear of the rear tires. About 1-1/4" less c2c of axles on drivers side vs passenger side.

If you put a straight edge across the side of the rear tire it points under the body on both sides, quite a bit on the drivers side.

Would you be willing to help me with the swap? I will compensate you.

That's a great deal. Sucks that you ruined a pair of tires on it, but you will def get away cheap on the axle housing. The swap isn't bad if you are just moving everything over. Be sure you pick up a couple axle seals for the new housing.

Just a thought, but you might check out the TC and tranny and their mounts with Singote. If the ends of the axle are bent forwards, then they might have been in 3-point loading with the DS and put some serious stress on the TC and tranny. There could be more damage that you haven't found yet. The slip yoke should prevent that, but you never know what crazy things could happen. Slip yoke could have seized, or been overloaded with grease or something.

Fortunately the tires will be cheaply replaced (Discount Tire) under warranty ... already talked with them. Good point on the seals, was thinking that too.

This was a first for me beside the tire rod thing, but this axle housing was bent.

His 4runner had a rear toe in.
