2002 Toyota 4runner 3.4l 5VZFE

Replacing a timing belt and all the goodies including the water pump.
the manual I have says to use FIPG to seal the water pump. The water pump I got has a smooth mounting surface and the gasket I got is metal-ish with a o ring sort of thing built in. Was this used in place of the sealer. I really do not like using a sealer with such a gasket. Any ideas

ive always used either a gasket or silicone, as long as you do a good job it shouldnt leak.

dont hesitate to use your best judgement.

The FIPG was used only with the original WP with the groove. The flat flange/gasket type requires no sealer. I did mine with nothing 45k ago and no problems. (I did mine at 120k, but then I did EVERYTHING).
