2002 Toyota 4Runner 5sp swap

For the time being, I plan to just use the auto ecu and at least fix the cruise control / clutch cancel. It looks like from everything I’ve read that an 03/04 Tacoma ecu would fix the CELs.

I’ll tell you, the control you get from having a manual is great. I was able to crawl through that mud at a different pace than when I had the auto.

I am definitely searching for a supercharger though.......

Cool thread.

Im looking to do a multimode Tcase swap as well. But it looks like yours had a top mount shifter? Mine I go does not? Did you change that in the Tcase?

Here is mine:

I'm collecting all the parts for my own 5-speed swap. Can't find a manual brake pedal anywhere.

Is it just the foot-pad part of the auto brake pedal that is too wide? Could it be cut down to fit? Or is it the angle of the arm, as well?

Auto starter should work just fine. Also the cross member from auto should be fine. You’ll need a master cylinder line. eBay one for 93 Supra. Fits like a glove. I got it on mine. As far as wiring. You could trick the auto Ecu into neutral for mean time. But you’ll have check engine light. I don’t recall since it’s been long time. But 02 4runner should be plug and play with manual ecu. So I think a m/t ecu out of 2000 4runnee would be plug and play. I could be wrong. Again, been a while since something like this came up here.
Only a 2003 or 2004 tacoma will work because of the drive by wire. I personally did all my wiring at the auto tranny plug. I didn’t wire in the clutch defeat, but I did wire the cruise! You end up losing Traction control if you can’t live with the check engine light on the 2002 ECM. Personally I was glad to be done with it and installed tru-tracks. I’m in CA so I had to go this route!

Are you saying if you swap the ecu to an 03-04 Tacoma one your check engine light works properly, but the traction control features don't work anymore? I thought the 03-04 Tacoma ecu was the golden ticket to everything working, but I haven't read through the stuff in a couple years.

I've been mulling the idea of swapping my 01 maybe...

Yes and no! The Tacoma ecu solves the check engine light problem but not traction control. Smog is not a problem either. smogs perfect every time. It plugs right in all the same connectors but something inside is missing. I've been told that some 2003-2004 Tacoma's came with traction control, but I've never been able to confirm it. I was told by someone it was only on 2wd pre-runners. Again, can't confirm it. Since I don't know what's missing in the tacoma ecu I just gave up. To be honest! It's so nice not having it in 2wd! Yes I get some wheel spin at times, but the alternative is hard to deal with.

The tacoma ecu is expensive and hard to find sometimes. I have a spare incase mine takes a crap.

Late to the party, but just read through this thread. Awesome job.
My auto tranny still works like it did in 2001 and currently has 518,600 miles on it...

Everything works on mine except front driveshaft.
All wiring diagrams anone else posted or mentioned did not work on my reverse lights. I found a different fsm that mentioned a white with blue for reverse and that fixed it.
I just wanted to buy a new front driveshaft because mine absolutely will not compress enough to work. At least an inch too long. Bought one from ebay for a 96 to 2000 and it is wayyyy too short. Just over 24 inches long where mine is 30 1/4" and needs to be at least an inch and a quarter shorter.
Not sure how other people can do the same swap and are able to reuse things others cant.
I retained my multimode on my 01.
What did everyone else use that worked?

The multimode transfer case is a different length than the j-shift - and so is the MT compared to the auto. You'll need a custom front driveshaft (and you *should* be using a custom rear shaft too, but I guess there was enough room in the slip on that one?).

I have a 98 5 speed SR5 with J shifter and I used to have a 2000 Auto Limited with Multimode. I have always wanted my 5 speed to have the multi mode transfer case for the AWD non-locked function. It was so much better in the winter on patchy snow and ice roads. This thread has inspired me to reinvestigate the posibility of multimoding my 98 5speed.

Oh nice, I will check my harness for a white/blue and test reverse. Did you get cruise control working?

I retained my multi-mode on my 01, I had a donor 00 truck that I swapped everything from, so I used the MT f/r shafts.

I have noticed that using the AWD mode the car feels much more touchy, since I stopped winter driving my truck I might switch to the J-shift since I don't need that AWD mode anymore.

Any luck with your cruise control, clutch cancel, and reverse lights? I have seen you asking all the 5sp swap threads lol.

I've been mobbing without all of these things for a while, but road trips absolutely suck without cruise.
